This is taken from an email sent out to the shotimes list from Ron Porter, and I thought I'd pass it along... sounds like good info.
Here's a method that I have used with really good success...
You'll need:
touchup paint
toothpicks
denatured alcohol
Meguiars 2000 grit sanding block
3M finishing compound (or similar)
Assuming bare metal is not exposed**;
Clean the area with denatured alcohol
Prepare your bottle of touchup paint per directions
Dip a toothpick into the paint, and cover 1/4 inch of
the tip with paint, but don't get a big glob.
Apply paint by putting the tip of the toothpick in the *middle*
of the chip. Gravity will allow the paint to flow from the toothpick
into the chip. The rough edges of the chip should act as a dam.
Repeat this every few hours or per instructions, until the filled-in
height of the paint chip is slightly higher than the surrounding
area. Let final application dry per directions.
Soak the 2000 grit sanding block in water. Hold the sanding
block length-wise at 45 degrees or so, to the paint chip. Lightly sand the
*bump* of paint with the edge of the sanding block. Very little of the
sanding block will come in contact with the touchup paint. Keep sanding
until its flush with surrounding area.
Apply finishing compound to the chip and surrounding area to blend an
get it totally smooth. Read paint instructions prior to applying wax.
You should not need clearcoat on solid colors, just metallics.
**If the chip goes to the metal, flow a level of primer into the
chip before continuing with the paint.
