Will be dropping the car off tommorow hopefully to get a replacement. Should be covered on the CPO warranty. Dont think they will fight it considering its a pretty common thing.

Ptu had been whining for about a year. Last week had an instance on my way home with my wife, the car felt like it was studdering for a moment, to the point she thought it was me doing something. Then the issue went away for a couple days. Then it happened. The horrible gear oil smell. Took it in the dealer to see if they could find a leak. No leak, they were backed up 2 weeks on work so they couldnt fit me in. Manager said to drive til it goes.

4 days later im grinding stuff up periodically in the PTU. (Which is a horrible sound by the way) Tommorow she gets dropped off. Hopefully they give me a loaner.

Really heart breaking because ive been meticulous with maintaince. I suppose things just break. On the bright side a new ptu should last me as long as the motor. Hopefully. Lol.

Did you ever change the PTU oil?
Yes. About 4 months ago. Did it twice that month to filly replace the oil. Oil was really bad when i did it, but no metal chunks or anything at that time. Used royal purple severe gear.

That stinks. At least it's under CPO warranty. That's alot of work for a small gearset. Think about a factory extended just before the CPO runs out.

Yeah ... once you hear the whine, the path is downwards :( Glad you have warranty coverage!

Just ticked 83000. And no. Grabbed it at 43000.

I'm not saying it's your fault, but this is why I asked if you had ever changed the oil in it.

83K is way too much. I had a 2013, PP w/cooler, and from what I heard a few months before I returned it at the end of lease, it was ready to grenade. And it had 40K miles on it.

Food for thought for anyone reading this. If you don't know if the oil's been changed, change it right away to something really good. If you buy used, privately or from a dealer (CPO), even if they have records of it, do it anyway ;)

100%. I wished I had done it sooner, but hadnt really done all my research before I had the car. Put 30k of the miles on it the first year, interstate travel. I supposed 83k on the original ptu isnt too bad.

Sounds about right, although there are some people out there that haven't had an issue way past that. But you never know, the car might have had it done way back and they have no clue. Anyway... ;)

You just never know with these things. Now if you can get the warranty to pay for a new water pump before it expires you should be all set...

Agreed ... usually comes down to driving conditions. Some people a) drive mostly highway, and b) aren't stomping on the happy pedal a lot. On the Edge we have had original PTUs go over 200K+ miles without failure - on 12 oz capacities. The fluid is gunked down, but PTU's still chugging away. No OCD tire/suspension maintenance either.

I would agree. I'm certainly not shy when it comes to using that go go pedal, at all. Haha. Its all bittersweet. Will just go with a much more aggressive fluid change interval, maybe every 3 or 6 months from here on out. Also for what its worth my car is a PP.

That is an epic amount of miles.

You are the first to my knowledge since jumping on the platform to have a PP PTU fail. In my personal research over a the past couple of years, I have seen six PTU failures that have been documented online on the forums. Five non-PP and one PP. This is why I always ask if the car is a PP or not. I am not defending Ford, but 83K is a bit much for not being shy on smashing the Go Pedal with the stock fluid.

When they replace it, take it home, re-drain the "lifetime crap" fluid out it and go with Redline Lightweight ShockProof. Both of the fastest SHO's on our platform use it both in the rear dif and PTU as well. The difference in performance and smoothness is remarkable. I use it too and I live in an extreme climate and lean pretty ******* my SHO everytime I hit the push start. Also if you have DP's this would be a good reason to either wrap them or get them coated for heat, if you live in a climate allows wrap.

I installed my PPE DP's about two months ago and wrapped them in black heat wrap. I installed them and have less then 500 miles on them. As you can see the pics below my wrap is turning white. That is the type of heat the PTU is dealing with from the DP's.

That is the plan. I did however change the fluid earlier this year. At about 70kish miles. I believe that got skipped over. Either way your 100% correct. I was thinking about wrapping my pipes while they are off but living in the rainforest that is Central Kentucky im not too sure its a great idea for me. Lol

What fluid did you end up going with last year? Also think about getting your DP's at least coated if you are worried about the future. If not, let it fly.

I used the Royal Purple Severe Gear. Think I'm going to let them fly. Plan on ordering the new PPE Pipes for next season. They look mighty fine.

If you are going to let it fly, throw in the Redline LW Shockproof fluid for the duration. Get your new PPE DP's coated, and when they are installed change the fluid again since your are taking the the stock DP's out anyways.
