Ok, my transmission seems to have it out for reverse. Sometimes no matter how long i have the clutch depressed, or what forward gear i put it into and then without letting up putting it in reverse, it just won't go in without some grinding. Sometimes though, it will go in as smooth as all the other gears (and unlike most other posts with this problem I don't have a problem going into any other gear) The clutch is a ford replacement w/ 40k, and the tranny has 80k. I've already had the clutch cable adjusted and trans. fluid changed, and its not getting better. sorry about the length, but any ideas?

Next time you are going to go in reverse. Stop the car. Put it in Neutral then shift in a fwd gear then go for reverse without releasing the clutch. I usually do a 1-2 then go reverse. This will stop all the moving parts inside the trans.

A couple of things I've noticed about going into reverse. Press the clutch shift to 1st (any forward gear) then without releasing the clutch go to reverse. You should be able to tell whether it went into reverse or not. If it didn't engage reverse put the car in neutral and release the clutch. Then repeat the process. It has always gone into reverse on the second try doing it this way for me. Also looks like you're really close to me, I live in West Springfield. Drop me a line at [email protected]

if the TOB wasnt replaced when the clutch was serviced 40K miles ago, then there lies your problem. sounds to me like the TOB has worn out and its worn the fingers of the pressure plate down, maybe even snapped a couple of them off.

my SHO was like that when i bought it...thought it was normal. then, during a mass antifreeze leak, the problem went away. it returned a week later. what happened was the antifreeze that got into the clutch housing via the vent, lubricated the TOB and made it shift like buttah. once the antifreeze went away, it was very difficult, if able, to select any gear..grinding every gear i tried. 5 miles later, it was parked and a new clutch and TOB was installed, shifts as smooth as buttah now.

Well for now, i just put it into reverse before i start it, and that works most of the time. sometimes it just won't let me put it into reverse, so i have to put it into a few fwd gears before i can go into reverse. A new clutch is coming eventually, but this one has some life in it yet.

I had a very similar problem with my car when I first got it and I did exactly as you, when I knew I was going to back up I just put it in reverse, then started the car.

Reverse is the only unsynchronized gear in the tranny. If going from first to reverse or third to reverse doesn't work for you then I would suggest continue doing what you're doing to minimize damage to the gear itself.

When my clutch was replaced the first time I didn't get to see (didn't care to see at that point) the used parts so I don't know if there was damage to the PP or the TOB. But I would get the clutch parts in the line of TTG if I were you.

im sure you have some clutch left. when i opened mine up, some of the rivets were just starting to get into the pressure plate and flywheel. and this was a factory clutch with 125K miles. not bad, eh ?
