I finally have my 60k results in. If you can't read it can be seen bigger here. Just click on the worksheet and you can see it bigger.

Jason,

Good job. It is great to see the gapping worksheet in action. I must ask, what brand of feeler gauge do you have in order to be able to measure in .005mm increments? That would be a very helpful tool.

I noticed in 2 places you replaced a 2505 req shim with a 2525. Why go that far when you've got one 0005 away from what you need? I personally think you were a bit too agressive in your shimming.

Scott,

I don't know what brand of feeler gauge it was. It was a set that my dad has had over the years, I can find out though. The worksheet worked great. One thing I did not notice until I got in there was that the work sheet is set up in the same layout as the motor, made it more simplified. After performing the first 60k, it seems like a cake walk now. I really don't dred it any more, I will be ready for the next one.

I see you're in Aurora. I live down in Pueblo. I'm curious, did you rent the valve shim tools? Or the whole kit from someone? I need to find one to rent, and am just curious as to where you got yours. Thanks!

As long as the gap is within the tolerance it will allow the valves to fully shut for heat transfer. By making a smaller gap, it will allow more wear so I am less likely to have valves out of spec, like my #5 exhaust was, on the next 60k. As you can see I adjusted ALL valves even though only two were out of spec.

If you plan on keeping your car and doing future 60ks then I recommend buying the tools. All you need is a tappet depressor, tappet holder, and a feeler gauge. I got my depressor and holder from SHOshop and already had an abundance of feeler gauges. If I did not leave mine down in Arizona I would let you borrow mine. If you would like any help, I am up for the drive. As far as the shims, SHOshop was great on getting them to me. I had them overnighted cause I was in a time crunch, cost more that way, but what do you do. Let me know if you want any help. I see you have the Quaife, did you install it your self? I think my centerforce clutch is going out and when I replace that I am going to put a Quaife in, along with a lightweight flywheel, and lookover on the gears and synchros.

Thanks for the info. I have to tear mine all the way down to the head gaskets because my rear is seeping a little coolant out, so I figure I better change them. I think I will probably just rent the kit from Josh at SHO Nut because I don't want to get stuck without a shim, and would like to only have the motor torn apart for a little while.
As for the Quaife, I bought the car with it already installed. I am not sure how difficult they are to install, but after seeing the transmission apart I don't think it would be too difficult. If you have any qualms about it I have heard the Video from SHO Nut is excellent. I'll let you know on the 60K+ stuff, I appreciate your offer and may very well take you up on it. I always enjoy getting to ride in someone else's car too, I get a feel for how fast (or slow!) my car really is.
Thanks again, I'll let you know when I plan to take it all apart (Damn this weather!). It will probably be within a few weeks. I just have to get it approved by the financeer's for a loan through next spring.

Cool! There is a complete upper gasket set on ebay right now that I think i am going to buy, so hopefully by next weekend I will have all the parts I need compiled.

As far as replacing the head gaskets, I thought I remembered reading somewhere that you had to replace the bolts once you removed them? Not sure, I just thought I remembered that. I think that while its out of commission, I'll also drop the pan and replace the rod bearings. Of any of the colorado sho guys are going to do the rod bearings soon, I have a 10-pack of the oil pickup tube/egr gaskets, so you are welcome to take them as needed! Maybe we could have a Colorado Sho Club meeting/tech session. Thanks again, and I'll be in contact with both of you!
