I have a Borla cat-back on my car and the resonator is a little dented up. I think maybe the PO went over a speed bump too fast or something. Anyway, I have some stainless exhaust pipe laying around in the garage and was thinking about cutting a length and deleting the resonator. Anyone have any ideas how this might sound? I don't want it to be TOO loud, but a little more volume might be nice when I go VROOM! lol :naughty:

Yep, that bad.

In fact, replacing it with the longest, fattest resonator you can find (basically a glasspack muffler) is the best. One of my Gen 2s had this long, fat, resonator on it (never could determine who made it), and it even sounded good with cheapie glasspacks out back.

I would leave that resonator alone.. 1 pipe entering and 2 pipes exiting. Good luck finding a replacement. As long as it doesn't leak I would leave it alone.

i still think my 95's some sort of freak, cuz i'm running without a resonator through single 2.5" pipe into a flowmaster 40 series and i have yet to hear rasp...

The resonator is made from some pretty good material and will last a lifetime.
You already have a well tuned system, so there is no need to experiment.

My 90 has the resonator deleted but replaced with a glass-pack straight through muffler. Best sounding set-up with no rasp and a tough rumble (with the Walker stainless short mufflers).

Listen to your car from the outside...under load.....as in have somone else drive it.

Ashley's car has a SS Catted Y-Pipe with a Borla Catback... It has quite a bit of rasp at about 4k. However, You would never know from the driver seat.

The 89 on the other hand has a FPS Catted Y-Pipe with a Borla catback as well...the difference is nuts, Almost no rasp on that car.

Both of those Y pipes use the same aftermarket catalytic converters and I believe both made with 2.25 inch tubing... Something isn't right with the SHOShop pipe. It has either been gutted, your smoking crack and can't hear the rasp, or you did not specify that it's the (truly still unequal) Equal Length SHOShop version which would then change the dynamics the exhaust travels.

Actually the FPS Y pipe uses larger pipes.
Its the best aftermerkt Y pipe for the SHO,with a price tag to show for it.

Does it have larger piping? I have a Performance Plus Ypipe (2.25in 409 stainless pipes), and Doug Lewis bought the rights to that pipe I believe which he now builds at FPS.

I also have an original SHOShop Y pipe (2.25in aluminized steel piping).

I believe the only difference is the PP pipe uses a superior collector and it's stainless.

stainless.

Bingo.

Diameter of the exhaust pipe has little to do with rasp. It does have a LOT to do with overall noise though.

Material has a LOT to do with rasp. Ever notice the rasp seems to come from UNDER the car instead of out the tailpipe?

An all stainless system will net you very little rasp, in comparison to one that is simple aluminumized steel. Especially once warmed up.

there's a difference between vibration and rasp. while it's true that weaker exhaust metal will resonate, that's not what causes the sound of a japanese fart out the tailpipes.
