Hi everyone I have a 91 Taurus SHO with 200K+ miles with the rod shifter. The transmission went out a while back and now I finally have the time and some extra money to replace it myself. My problem is that I'm out in the middle of Montana and the only used transmission I can find closest to me is from a 90 SHO. I know the 89 and 90 used a cable shift version and not a rod shift. I feel kind of dumb for asking but would that transmission from the 90 work on my 91? If that doesn't work does anyone know a trusted source online that sells good used transmissions for SHO's? I miss my SHO very badly and can't wait to drive it again.
Thanks!

It will fit.
You can convert any cable shift tranny to a rod shifter.
You can look in the "SHO Parts for Sale" section on this forum for alternatives if the other deal falls through, or if it isn't a good deal.
Don't throw away your old tranny, some internal parts are impossible to buy new.

Thanks that is good to know that it will fit. How hard is it to convert the cable shift tranny to the rod shifter?

Never done it myself, but it is a pretty common thing. Pretty basic from what I have heard.

I am in the middle of a new Trans job for myself. Done 3 of them within a year on different SHO's.

Highly recommending finding a used one here on the forum if you can. People here are great! (Thanks Nick Gray for my Trans!)

The Trans job on a SHO is quite simple really provided you have good tools and a mechanical ability about you.

Get one of these from Harbor Freight for $75. Best $75 Bucks I ever spent! Its an Engine Support Bar.

If you have air tools use them, also make sure the first thing you remove is the DIS Module... broke 2 of those when the engine shifted.

To answer you question, To convert from Rod Shifting to Cable shifting is very simple. Jack the car up, disconnect the shifter from the trans, disconnect it inside, slide it out, slide the other one in, hook it up, done. I have never done it myself but from what I understand that is what it is. Someone with more knowledge please correct me if I am wrong.

If you have anymore questions the Forum is the place to go!

Forget the cable shifter since you already have a rod shifter in your 91. Cable shifter parts are no longer available from Ford. Disconnect the long bolt and clevis from your tranny, unbolt the tranny and slide it out. Install your new tranny and connect your rod shifter which will bolt up just fine.

the cable shifter attaches w/ a bracket that you just remove from the trans case, and then you can bolt up the rod shifter - simple stuff.
