I recently saw an SUV driving around with a set of what looked like shorty neon light bars mounted on the lower front valance. They were on while the rest of the lights were off, so I guess the owner meant for them to be used as DRLs.

Since the Taurus doesn't have a normal foglight, I was considering getting something similar that would replace the light in the housing with something much brighter and wiring it to be on when the motor was running.

Has anyone done anything similar or could point me in the right direction for something to buy?

Are you looking for a single color, or something that can do multiple colors? Rather than going with neon, I'd suggest an LED strip. The LED strips generally run off of 12V already and can be cut to the desired length. You can get them in single colors (which would not require any controller) or you can get an RGB set that can do just about any color with the appropriate controller. The strips are waterproof and self adhesive.

Probably the least expensive way to pick these up would be on the popular auction website, but you can also get them from places like PartsExpress.com and MCMElectronics.com. I've used both of these places over the past several years without issue. I'm not sure why, but this morning PartsExpress' website seems to be having issues.

I want to do either white or blue. I'd rather not do LEDs, because I want to replace the stock light bar while keeping the housing on the fascia. I've seen some neon bars, but was wondering if anyone here has tried anything else to customize their lighting.

Unless you are affiliated with a police agency don't do blue.

I used to own a Fiesta that had the same LED lights but mounted vertically. Some owners wanted to do the same thing as you. No one really came up with a good solution.
