Took me SHO to the alignment shop yesterday.

Today I'm driving down the road and suddenly the wheel is rattling bad. Make it 3 more miles down the road and discover my wheel is loose.

Take the center caps off and it's totally busted.

One stud snapped clean off, all 4 other lugs were loose.

The rim's mating surface is in pieces.

Can I replace the stud or does this mean replacing the knuckle?

Front or rear? Rear studs can be replaced pretty easily, not sure about the fronts. However, I'd probably replaced the hub if its all ****** up.

The studs are easy to replace. With the wheel removed you can just pound it out from the tip or what is left or use a punch if necessary. There will be a spot some where just turn it to find where you got the most clearance. To put the new one in just push it in as far as you can then put some 1/2" washers on it put the lug nut on and tighten it. You may have to adjust the stack of washers until its completely seated and your done.

How about heat? Will that help some? I have a 10lb sledge at home, my car is like 20 miles from home though.

Just pound on it you say? I can certainly do that.

Yes, hammer it out. A 4lb should be enough....

Have an old lug nut you don't want? Use that to pull the new one in, with the washers.

Do you have a spare? Put on the spare tire, tighten the lugs and drive it home.

Yeah, four old ones now. I have a full sized spare thankfully. Except for the part where I have a ghetto SHO.

I looked at the rim, there is an insert that rides on the hub itself, that part is all mangled and useless, can't you buy a replacement?

Hopefully OZ can help me out, if not I'll find some Volvo "R" rims and so eff it.

Does anyone else think it's suspicious that I drive the SHO 3 days after putting the thing back together with no issues and less than 24 hours after the alignment my wheel basically explodes? WTH!?

I'm not letting anyone outside the SHO circle. touch my SHO again, end of story.

Is the wheel itself okay? It sounds like a hubcentric ring for the wheels, which you should be able to get....

Yes, the wheel is okay, that little ring is trashed, hubcentric ring huh? I thin kOZ discontinued these unfortunately, I do not even know the make or offset, shoot I don't even know the width but they are on 235 tires so I think 7.5".

Maybe I could have one machine if nothing else??

It would be easy to make if someone had a lathe by copying one of the other 3.

My best friends works at a full blown machine shops othe machining shouldn't be an issue.

I also live right besides a huge machining complex.

It probably would be better to have one to copy but I don't think I could get one out of the other wheels to be honest.

Is it plastic? They sell them on ebay...

No, it's not plastic, it is the same material as the rim itself.

wait, whats trashed, the hubcentric ring, or the centercap/insert thing?

-Sam

The hub centric ring, somehow the center cap is unscathed

Kevin has a picture, I'm not home so I can't upload anything now but I'll have carnage pictures soon.

I'm thinking that as long as I can get the precise ID and OD I need for the ring I can just have my friend make up one of the lathe and press it in.

If I'm "that" lucky, lately, my luck hasn't but so good.

-Josh

EDIT: Found a full set, cause I'm good like that .

Have you contacted the alignment shop about this yet? That was a pretty big **** up on their part, and they should be responsible for the repair costs. If they resist, I'd remind them that they're lucky it's just a repair bill, and not a wrongful death lawsuit. This could have ended much worse had you been on the highway when the stud(s) failed.

I would contact the shop about it. If they are stand up folks they will help make it right.

I never take my SHO (or any of my cars) to places I don't know.

And yes, they are easy to replace.

I contacted the shop and talked to the owner. He assumed no responsibility and said that he did not take the wheels off during the alignment and therefore isn't responsible.

I say that I asked for an alignment AND a wheel balance/rotation. He said they didn't do the rotation and when I picked the car up I was annoyed at that. ALSO, the gave me NO receipt or computer printout for the alignment. They did charge my the $65 for the alignment though.

The guy didn't get my car on the alignment rack until 8PM despite me visiting the shop/calling ahead of time and dropping the car off at 8 in the morning. I didn't pick up the car until 9:30 PM and was a little taken aback that not only did I not get a printout of the alignment but that he didn't had me a receipt but given as it was 9:30 I assumed he was just as tired as me (I worked all day that day, worked hard) so I figured I'd stop by later in the week and pick both up.

Like I said, I called the shop as soon as I discovered the damage, he wasn't going to cover it AT all.

Legally, I have no proof that he even worked on my car, all I have is a witness (person who dropped me off tho pick up SHO) but he is friends with the owner and also my boss so I am basically SOL. :bonk:

LUCKILY, the damage is only to one stud, the alignment feels good, and I can use the wheel on the rear as the rear hubs seems slightly smaller. :rainshit:

I will keep pushing on, if anyone has one of these "rings" for the OZ Monte Carlo rims that they could spare I will gladly take it.

-Josh

PS: Will upload pics soon, friend has ring but I will take picture of it because we love carnage in all shapes and sizes here on SHOforum!

Hmm... My team dynamics came with centric rings, i took them out.

I gave the remains of the hub centric ring to my friend who works at a hydraulic/machining shop.

For now, I put the rear left side (directional tires) in the front with the 4 remaining lugs and a spare on the back. I have school and then work all day tomorrow but Saturday I am going to replace the broken lug and bolt the rim w/o hub-centric ring on the rear with the smaller hubs (my original plan).

I guess I'm lucky that the wheel didn't fly off the car at highway speeds.
Lucky that the repair is less than $10 and the hub-centric ring can be replaced.

Wow, you are lucky that the wheel didn't come off. It's no fun.

I also think you got screwed by not getting a receipt for the work done. This is/was your proof of the work done.
