I'm getting a bit of a gas smell in my '89 SHO and I suspect my injector seals need to be replaced. See, a previous mechanic decided to be "helpful" and replace the injector seals for me (no charge) when replacing all the coolant hoses, but had to do it twice when there was a gas smell. This could also be why I'm running lean :(

Are these the proper seals?

Also, do I just replace the seals or is any gasket sealant recommended?

BTW, I have the SHO Shop high pressure injectors, installed by Vadim himself.

Thanks!

The first BWD part number is what you need. They sell them individually at the parts stores. The second number is the same thing, it just includes an extra o ring that you don't need. Dorman part number is for a set of 4.

No sealant needed.

Just to be sure that you are sure...There are two "seals" on every injector, no matter what they call them. One at the top and one at the bottom. If it's an O-ring type seal, that is, it's squished in a groove or cavity to make the seal, use a little vaseline or light grease on the o-ring to help it squeeze into its place.

the fuel smell is usually from a leaking top o-ring where the injector fits into the rail.

the running lean is usually from a cracked lower donut seal where the injector fits into the intake (head).

I fixed the running lean. I had installed a cone filter and put the MAF sensor in upside-down so as not to stretch the wiring. Turned out the MAF was filthy, once I cleaned it the car is running like new again. The MAF is now in the correct topside position.

Next project - I have a small tear in the right CV boot! I'm going to squish CV grease into it and fix the tear with Shoe-Goo.

Anyone have part numbers for the seals where the injector meets the head (lower)? On Rockauto they appear blue, and without the factory one peice molded into the stepped seal.

Thanks. The factory lower seals have a O-ring like lip on one edge of the OD (to help seal against the step in the head), and a slight protrusion on the ID to keep them centered in the head. I expanded the SHOsource image and can't tell if they have those features, the ones I bought from Rockauto didn't.

What is the part number that you bought off rockauto? RA doesn't list the proper seals for the SHO. You have to go by the numbers that I posted above.

This is my current list -

BWD 274822

BWD 274531

Dorman 90121

Standard Intermotor HK9335

The HK9335 are the current ones I bought from Rockauto but they don't come up under the SHO. You have to search the part number to find them listed. I'm pretty sure they go to a Camry. That's why there is the extra O-ring that we don't use. If you buy that part number you are getting the correct seals. Just throw away the big O-rings.

Just did a broad search on the O-rings. Pretty much any Toyota 4 cylinder engine from the 80s and 90s uses the same rings as the SHO. When searching on Rockauto just pick a random Toyota(1995 Camry 2.2L) and you will find the correct injector seals.
