I tried a search.
I am learning. trying not to ask things that have been asked.

so I need to replace the Alternator. It looks like it may be kinf of tricky to get to all of the bolts (although engine was hot, so I did not look too close.

is it pretty strait forward, or are there any tricks or things that I need to know about? I know the Alt is not used on the other Taurus's. Any other car that might be compatable?

I am thinking about seeing if anyone on classifieds has a used one that I can get cheep. but I need one in a hurry.

Thanks

Ill bite.

Had mine out when I was going to replace my compressor.

Basic steps are.
1. Remove battery and battery try.
2. Since you have an ATX put a socket on the belt tensioner (the one near the firewall) and push it clockwise to release tension. Use alot of leverage, easier.
3. move belt out of way.
4. Unplug alternator.
5. Remove two lower mounting bolts facing battery area.
6. Remove nut w/wire on backside of alternator.
7. I think theres another mounting bolt on the back too.
8. Pull out and replace.

Its pretty easy since the brackets will hold it in place when you remount it. Just thread the bolts in partially for all sides then tighten down.. As for the belt... Remount it on all the pullies except the big rear one near the firewall. Pull on the tensioner and then mount it on there and release. Its not to bad once you figure it out and use a good leverage. Make sure the belts ribs are in the pullies grooves, or just replace the entire belt if its cracking.

If you buy a rebuilt unit from a local parts store, test it before you leave to see if it operates within spec. I went through several before I happened upon a good one. You want to install and remove these things only so many times before you start to see red and want to shoot you car.

I forgot to add.. You need to remove the other ATX tensioner in front of one of the mounting bolts.. Pretty easy and to remount it I think the torque is 25-30ft/lbs. Double check that since the tighter it is the less it spins (quick wear), or to loose and it will fall off.. Not good..

What other tensioner? There is an idler pully there that you don't need to remove just manuver the alternator around it.

also, REPLACE YOUR BATTERY! Otherwise you will probably **** your new alternator. (see sig)
