replace power antena

well the 95 mtx i just bought had a bad power antena so the guy gave me 50 bucks off the price so what should i replace it with. another ppower antena or should i just get a regular antena and buy a k$n air filter.

There is a fitting that the antenna slides through. It's a cylinder with a nut on top that the antenna goes through. There is a special socket or wrench that removes the top nut. If you are careful you can use a pair of channel locks to take it off. Since it is down on the fender just a little, you must be careful with the channel locks not to unscrew the nut too far in a single grip action. If you do the channel locks will hit the fender and scratch the paint. Once the nut is off, you need two people. Have one person turn the radio on if the antenna goes up automatically or push the up switch if manual. The second person will grip the antenna and pull it out. The antenna has a ****** on the bottom of it (which the nut you took off holds down) and a toothed plastic cord in the center. It works much like the old STP racers we had as kids. Check to see if the plastic is broken. If the antenna doesn't go down at all, once the nut is taken off the antenna should be able to be pulled out. To get the plastic out, get the motor to move to the up position and have the other person pull it out. Reverse the procedure to put a new antenna in.

While replacing the power antenna mast is easy in theory, there is usually pieces of broken "lead" stuck in the motor. If that is the case, you will need to remove the motor through the fender well, open it up, and remove the broken pieces. Still isn't that difficult, although the single bolt holding the motor in is a bit tough to get at.

If the motor works but the antenna does not move you need a new drive for the antenna. Easy to fix. You can get it af Ford and it comes with instructions. About $30 though. The drive is like a string of beads that the motor uses to pull the antenna up and down.

thats exactly it the motor runs but no go so its' seams i can just replace the drive thanks guys great help!

The effort is going to be about the same regardless of which type of antenna you choose. A permanent mast will certainly never have motor problems, but it also lends itself to damage or vandalism. A replacement power antenna will eventually require service too.

So, it's really a toss-up, and comes down to the look you desire and how much $$$ you want to spend. You can usually find new aftermarket complete replacement power antennas for about $50, or if the motor in your existing antenna is fine, then a replacement mast would run $25-$40. There are also enough used Taurus/Sable power antennas on eBay and at junkyards for short money too.

i bought oen used from SHOooo and less than 40 mins later i was emailing him telling him how good it worked on my car. very easy job. the only problem i had was that i broke the small bolt holding the antenna motor into the back of a clasp liek thing. other than that easy as ****.

I just replaced my antenna as well. At first I tried to replace just the mast but the motor had eaten some of the lead so it ended up being a bit of a pain. In the end I decided to replace it with a fixed mast because I remember every winter how much of a pain in the butt the power antenna is!! It always get stuck with ice and snow..what a pain.

So I replaced it with a black mast of a new F150 and it works great.

Definatly replace it with a fixed mast. Your local walmart should have one for about 7 bucks. Power antennaes are just too expensive and the reception is inferior to that of a fixed mast, not to mention mechanical problems and breakage. Why else do you think most of all new cars have gone back to the fixed mast.....

Because they're cheaper???? I keep mine lubed every week w/WD40 or better yet some dry **** spray I picked up. When I lived in Alaska, the WD40 worked great; never had any problems. Like anything else, a little preventive maintenance goes a long way.
