Well I got the car back together last night. Started it up and backed out of the garage.....ONLY to find out that the damn thing won't shift. I can shift it into some gears....It won't go into 2nd most of the time and I didn't try past 3rd.

The clutch feels real good, but why won't it shift? Are a few of my shifting forks bent? I know the clutch is engaging and disengaging...thats not the problem.

SHO'S shoot

Well I'm gonna go grab a beer and wait to see what u guys think

Well I didn't drain it. But alot leaked out...I refilled it after...It took 2 quarts and then started leakin on the floor. I read the manual and it takes 3 quarts? Maybe it will take some more fluid now?

yeah I pulled up on clutch pedal to set the clutch...

I added Type F Motocraft....Thats what the Ford dealership said was in there originally...Both were the same color red....so I think they are the same.

Had the same problem but mine was like almost impossible to go into first- than second it kept grinding cuz i would miss it- but than after about 500 miles it has gotten better.. maybe something with the fluid making the blocking rings stickin and after alittle breakin they move aorund easier- but i still dont think its cured all the way

I hope its not my linkage or anything... but i know the feeling- second sux its like u have to force 50 pounds on it and than some to make it click in... i hate it- but lately its gettin better... make sure u got fluid in there

Im gonnna go get some friction modifier which might help- let me know what u do to imnporve it if anything works for you

When you take the half-shafts out the tranny fluid will leak. Make sure it has fluid and check for leaks around the half-shaft to transaxle seal. It is not uncommon for these seals to break when pulling/installing the shafts.

Did you by chance do the tranny drain plug mod. when you had dropped the tranny?

There are absolutely no leaks. I replaced both seals and was very careful reinstalling half shafts. I also lubed up seals before installing halfshafts so they weren't dry. I did not do the drain plug mod. I didn't even drain fluid, except what drained on my head when removing tranny. eek!

I really don't wanna rip it all apart again, but it's not driveable. At least I put everything backtogether with antizeeze thumbs_u

I used Mercon dextron in mine. I thought that that was what was used originaly.

The type F is for older cars like from the 60's. I think, in automatics the type F is for harder/crisper shifts, later Ford used the mercon dextron stuff for smoother shifts. either that or it is the other way around.

I don't know if that would make a noticable difference though. The only advise that I can give you is to pull up on the clutch pedal but that has already been said.

Are you sure you did all the throw out bearing stuff correctly? and torqued the pressure plate to the fly wheel?

Is everything back together properly with the shift linkage? Cables on with cable shifter, no missing bolts with rod shifter?

I am sure flywheel was torqued correctly. Throw out bearing went in good also. All that was correct. I checked multiple times. :D

All bolts are put back in rod shifter. THere is no adjustment...so I don't understand how this could be out of adjustment. Rolling mechanism works as it should.
