I have no idea about good paint shops in CT, but here's the process that I went through a few years back to get my '89 SHO repainted in the original black.

I also needed some bodywork done, and I came up with a sheet with what I wanted. It also stated that I wanted a base+clearcoat job ('89 didn't have clearcoat on black) that was better than stock, but not show-quality, as the car was a daily driver.

I had a few shops decline to quote me a paint job, probably because of the black, and that I was going to be picky!

I ended up at the local Audi+Porsche dealer's bodyshop. They quoted $3K for a Spies-Hecker base+clearcoat black paint job. For a color change, I'm sure that you can add another $1-2K to that price.

If you don't get a good recommendation, go to the nearest Porsche/BMW/MB dealer's bodyshop for a quote.

Keep in mind that the cost of materials on ANY paint job is (1) not very high, and (2) a minor part of the entire job. Most of the cost is in the LABOR to properly prep the car and do the job. If you are picky about getting a good job done, IMHO I would not trust any quote below $3K unless you get a detailed explanation of what they do, and a guarantee of satisfaction.

There are no shortcuts, nor any "deals", in getting a great paint job!

Well my dad owns an autobody shop and seeing people having there cars repaired I'd say 3k if not more for a color change. Also what conditon are body panels in? Check door bottoms the little bit of rust on a seem is bad news and should almost be replaced. Then check above wheel well linings for rust, the trunk lid, and wheel wells. And remember a color change is more money if done right. To repaint under the hood for a SHO it's almost needed to yank the gnine. Then sand down all of it and paint it. Then they have to pull interior pieces for paint under them and stuff. So if you want it done right, don't go looking for the cheapest place.

Cost me 3,300 to get my 91+ totally repainted. I had NO rust, NO dents, did NOT repaint door jams ore engine bay as they looked brand new anyway.

That was the lowest quote I got, I went to 8 body shops and got estimates. only 4 of them would repaint an entire car. They make money on the collisions. THey don't like big dirty jobs.

I was very satisfied with the paint job. The car looked brand spanking new. NO runs, and for a black car, didn't look repainted.

Cost of paint was roughly 800-900 dollars of the 3,300.

What if I were to take care of all the prepping? Say I already had the interior yoinked, and the engine was out already... that would leave a freshly sanded waiting to be painted body. how much would that reduce from the cost?
