I have a spare intake that I want to prep as much as possible for powder coating.

What works for getting a bad spray paint job from an intake without harming the intake? I have heard aircraft stripper, but I read that it can leave a dull gray to blackish coating from the reaction of the stripper and the aluminum.

Any ideas?

Edit: I did search, but didn't find much.

The powder coater should blast the intake before coating.

Aircraft stripper has worked well in my exprience. I didn't notice any discoloring... But who cares? You're coating it.

Unless your grinding the castings down and sanding the entire thing smooth, let the powder coater do it all.

Sand blasting will probably be done to prep and nothing else should really be needed. The paint will come with ease with that process.

What should I use to clean the insides? I know they are not coating the insides, just want it clean before getting it done.

Any ideas what the average prices would be for getting an intake powder coated?

Use a wire brush attached to a drill. Time consuming but you won't be dealing with chemicals.

Um, yeah, I went to Pro Strip today.

Well, first I called at about 330. The guy I talked to, was very rude, made it very clear, "I'm leaving by 5, and if you are not here then too bad, I am leaving at 5 and we are closed for shut down all next week."

So, I make it there by 4:30, I open up my trunk show him the pieces I am looking at getting powder coated, an intake, BBB's, valve covers and an h-brace. He says in a very bothered tone "You are easily looking at $400-500 to do all of that, just for prepping, masking, cleaning, blasting, and that is just to get it ready to powder coat." I asked, what about just this H-Brace, he said, "Minimum of $65 on anything." I asked if I could do any of it to help save on cost, basically his answer was "No." "Obviously you don't really have all the money to do this. What were you expecting to pay, or don't you know?" He was rude and apparently didn't care how he handled a potential customer. I will most likely go somewhere else for my business.

I mean if it legitimately costs that much fine, but don't be a butt when explaining it, I am not dumb.

Didn't SHOSource offer powder coating intakes after porting them or something? It seems like they did at one point, but I couldn't find it again when I went back to look.

My local powder coater, who has an STi, has a minimum shop fee for something like $5-$10, IIRC. I had a few things done by them and my really small pieces incurred those charges.

If done right, the SHO intake will take some work for masking. If the TOTAL cost were that, I wouldn't be too terribly upset, but for just prep.... FO!

I had my intake/valve covers/brakes/etc. done for dirt cheap, but it was a favor for a favor deal. Realistically I would look at about $400 to have everything you listed done.

Being rude instantly loses me as a customer, as for the most time, I'm trying to keep my 'assertiveness' at bay. I would also spread the word. :)

has anyone ever tried those do it yourself powder coating kits from like summit? i mean if they turn out pretty decent then dropping the $100 or so on that and doing it yourself might be worth it. idk just my 2 cents

Man, boat it sounds like he was a real **** about it. I will never go there.

FYI, I've seen a sign for a place in the Angola area ( off 120) that does powder coating. The name of it is Cragers Custom Powder Coating. I've never talked to them, but it could be worth a shot. It looks like it's a small operation where the guy built himself a shop. Sometimes those are the best people to deal with.....they appreciate any business. Good luck.

There number is 260-833-4885.

And see, if he would have been less of a **** about it, then I could understand the cost being that high. It was his initial attitude that killed it.

He said it was like $400-500 for the whole job. I typed that when I was sleepy last night, my thoughts went faster than my fingers.

I am going to check out 2 places. Keystone Powder coating, and the place that Jayro mentioned. Keystone already has some SHO intakes and valve covers done, and they look mighty yummy. :dribble: :omgsho:

Wow that's a lot! Business must be booming. You should ask him if he's hiring. If he is, there must be someone you know that would want that kind of experience.

Edit: his attitude, while not excusable, might be explained by the end of business day before a holiday?

LoL Tom... that was my thinking kind of you can't show up when the guy is ready to go for a long weekend, then show him a buncha stuff in your trunk and ask if he can do it on the cheap... lol

But yea.... some of the electrical supply houses are the same way.... I went in with Doug for a fuse the other day... some odd 6.5A glass fuse he found inside his Denon stereo at home.... they wanted to sell him a box of em... and he said he didn't wanna do that... so he came back over to where I was looking at tools and stuff and told me, and I went back over and got a fuse for nothing...

At any rate.... things I've learned about a SHO, is I almost always try to get a price on the phone.... like the guy who said he would mirror shine my intake for $250..... I have not lost that email / quote.... cause I dont think he knows what hes in for... but if I pay up front, its already done... let him figure out how hard it is... :)

I remember calling him a good 2 or 3 years back.... and what I remember was about $300, but in my head.. I would have taken it to C&P to get it all cleaned up First for $20... then if you took it home and washed em in a little soapy water, they would be pretty much ready to get coated..

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...... if you wannnnnnnnaaaaaa you could always look around for a nice PC setup.... then the next thing would be a cheap used oven we could use and hook up ..... you probally don't have 240 in that garage tho do ya? Being detached.. that would be an issue....

Yeah places that pull that sort of crap are definitely worth my time spent spreading the word.

On the pricing, if that includes coating, it's a little high, but not out of this world. The best I dealt with was a guy who said he could soda blast my intake for about $125 (an hour's labor). So I left the intake.

He then calls me to say it's done, and it'll be $300 +tax.

This was just for soda blasting, nothing else.

I told him good luck with the sale of the intake, because the only one he ****** over today was himself.

Went out, bought another intake for $50, and had it soda blasted by someone else for $75. I win. :)

yeah, that could be it. Still, if I treated a customer like that , regardless of the situation, I would not have a job anymore. In my 15+ years of dealing with customers I have learned to smile on the outside while on the inside I'm thinking about wringing their neck. Ah well, such is life.:nut:

I think the guy he's talking about might be the owner... he's usually the guy at the desk and on the phone..... so you gotta account for that too..
