With the intake included, it's definitely on the "large" end of the V6 scale. Without the intake, average size and weight for a DOHC V6. It's heavy, because of the iron block and the large intake.

A straight 6 will be longer, but narrower (of course). Most DOHC straight 6s of around 3.0 displacement will be heavier, if they are iron blocks. The V design saves weight over an inline engine.

A rocker V8 (like an LS series, SBC, old 5.0 Mustang, etc) usually ends up being about the same size/weight as the SHO, but a DOHC engine will be larger. An all aluminum V8 will usually be lighter.

Thanks Firebat, The reason I ask is that I am looking for a donor car for a RWD swap. Something about 1000# lighter. Something with the body lines to match the engine lines. Lots of LS1 and 5.0 L stuffed into small cars. But very few SHO engines. Are you the one that build a RWD SHO? Got any pics of that?

I'm not the one that posted the pictures and video here, but I am building one yes.

For the purposes of the swap, if a 5.0 will fit, so will a SHO, but keep in mind that the SHO is tall because of the intake. IIRC 29 inches from oilpan to top of intake. More if you space the intake up to turn it around. If you dry sump the engine, you can gain back a few inches, but not much.

I've seen a SHO in an MGB and a Triumph, so I'm sure you can make it fit into whatever you find.

As stated, the intake manifold does increases the height and adds a fair amount of weight up top as well. A lot of newer (like early 90's and up) "V" engines have the intake runners curl 180 degrees and down into the valley between the cylinder heads.

What RWD car are you looking to swap into?

I was seriously considering an E30 BMW (3-series from the mid 80's to early 90's) but I can never make up my mind.

I also considered the first generation Mazda Rx-7, as well as a Miata...

Found this site and info. I think we have these specs around for the SHO engine to add to this.

Strong leaning for the 240/260Z and then hope like **** to find a Ferrari 250 GTO kit to add to it, Triumph Spitfire/GT, Healey 100 ( when I hit the lotto), Jaguar E type (again when hit the lotto), Cobra kit ( used). Found a Lotus Elite but not enough info to determine if it could be done and not cut fiberglass body or move the engine back enough to maintain handling.

iirc, 24 wide, 29 high, 24-27 long depending on what you do with the throttle body. I don't recall the weight, but its pretty close to the 302/5.0 as I recall.
