Just bought a Gen I rear spoiler and most of the brackets need reinforced. Two of them are just hanging there. I have a good Gen I spoiler however I want to paint the spoiler a different color so rather than ruin the original paint on mine, I bought this one to paint. I was going to take off the good one on my 91+ and use it to make a template with a 2x6 to insure I put the bracket back on in the right locations. What I'm not sure about is the brackets have what looks to be black adhesive that held them together which is pretty thick, close to 1/8". I was thinking of removing all the old adhesive and reinforcing with fresh material however am concerned the spoiler may not fit correctly if I remove the old adhesive. Has anyone had experience reinforcing their spoiler? What procedures did you take? Also what adhesives did you use: epoxy, liquid weld, liquid nail, etc.?

You can peel all that black stuff off. The thickness you see is only the excess that squeezed out. It is pretty thin between the bracket and the spoiler. You will need to pull the brackets off in order to reinforce them good. When you pull them off you will see very clear impressions from where they were and its pretty easy to line them up again. The holes on the trunk lid are larger than the studs on the brackets so even if you dont get the brackets in the exact spots they will still fit thru the holes and the spoiler will mount fine. I used Gorilla Glue to reinforce my 2 spoilers and they have held up great. I pulled the one off my 91 a few months back to examine it and its still holding up great. I dont think i'll ever have any problems with it.

I put some doublesided tape on the brackets so that they would not scratch the paint on my lid. The brackets are designed to flex a little too so they actually adjust themselves as you tighten the nuts down. The spoiler will sit flush when you are done.
