If I rebuild my mtx at home what would be involved. do I need to change shims at all. I am planning on just doing the seals and blocking rings and making sure the differential is in good shape. would I need any special tools other than basic hand tools. I just want to make sure I can do this with out anything special. would I need a press?

You would have to set the differental preload once you have everything back together...that job requires a special tool. Perhaps someone could loan you one here on the forum for a small fee. shrug

That's only if he's putting in a Quaife. For the rebuild you really need the SHONut video.

I have the shonut video but I just don't know what steps to leave out since I am not using the quiafe. some are obvious but others I am not sure of.

You will have to disassemble and reassemble the main shaft and fifth gear shaft to replace the blocking rings so pay close attention to those sections of the video. The input shaft seal, shift shaft seal and output shaft seals can all be accessed after the gearsets are removed from the transaxle case halves. Inspect the bearing rollers and cups for wear. A caution is to note the location of the bearing shims and cups and to make sure that they are still positioned properly during the fitting of the case halves back together.

As far as what parts of the video you don't need to be concerned with are those sections that deal with any disassembly of the differential itself.

As for other tools, just make sure you have a set of pin punches. I think a 3/8" punch is the only required one. There's a roll pin located inside the sealing surface of the case halves that needs to be removed and without the proper sized punch it's a pain to get out :) You'll also going to need a pair of snap ring pliers for removing the snap rings that hold in each synchro. A pencil magnet is also very handy for removing the detent plunger and spring. Other than that I can't think of any other special tool for rebuilding the MTX off the top of my head. A razor blade for cleaning the case half sealing surfaces, laqueur thinner for cleaning the case half surfaces, and a good sealant so be kept in mind. I personally like the Permatex anaerobic gasket maker for sealing the case halves. Rebuilding the MTX can seem daunting the first time, but take your time and watch the video multiple times, you'll probably notice something new every time. Best of luck on your rebuild.
