So my rearview mirror decided to make an inconvenient departure from it's normal location on the windsheild. I think it had something to do with the cold, cause neither the metal plate on the mirror or the windsheild have anything left resembling a sticky substance.

What kind of adhesive do you guys recommend to get it back on there, cause looking around my house, we have elmers glue and that's about it.

-thanks :)

Theres a small kit for re-gluing it. Usually at AZ or similar. However due to the temperatures youmay have some problems. Unless you have a garage thats heated, put it in there overnite and reglue in the AM... Or talk to a windsheild place on what they would use in the cold temps. HTH

Be sure to remove the metal plate from the mirror, glue it to the windshield, and let it dry overnight before reattaching the mirror. There is a little set screw that holds the mirror and the plate together.

My dad trusts 2 part epoxy for glueing them back. Don't know if anyone else tried it and how well it works.
You will need a razor blade, rubbing alcohol, and whatever glue.

A razor for scraping the glue off of the window and alcohol for cleaning the glass and the metal peice.

The epoxy idea might work, he claims that if you rip it off with epoxy on there it will take glass with it  I just use the regular adhesive......................

I bought the kit at Murrays. I think it was like, 8 dollars? Had everything from the cleaning pad, glue, sandpaper to remove old glue from metal tab, and even the razor.

Worked like a charm.

Also a good time to mount it up higher if you are one of those tall guys.

My mirror first fell off about 10 years ago. Since then it's come off again every year or two. I got in recently, first 90 degree day, there it was on the floor. I was going to spend another 5 bucks on the kit and do it myself, when I decided to stop at the windshield repair shop I pass twice a day. I figured if they'd do it for 20 or less it would be worth it. The girl said I should just stop when I see one of their vans there and give the guy 10 bucks. Which I did. He said the stuff they use is better than I can buy, and it should be good for years.

Here is a better idea:|

Tell your INS Company that a flyin highway rock broke your windshield.

Chances are they will say,OK< go get a new one.

Then have the guy puttin in your new glass do it.

I used 3-4 different kits before I found one that actually works... permatex. It's a mite more expensive at 5-6 bucks, but it's worked for 2+ years so far, and through our 5 day 95+ degree, 80%+ humidity heat wave. I think the secret is the sandpaper... rough up the metal mounting tab, and the glue will have orders of magnitude more holding area.

Great minds think alike:thumb:. The sandpaper and permatex works for me, even with a big heavy Dodge Durango Auto Dimming mirror on it. Even driving 10 miles if gravel roads a day.:oogle:
