Today I had to change the rear brake pads. We (yes, I had help), noticed that the inside pads on both sides were worn more than the outside pads. The outside pads had at least 60% of life left while the inside ones were about 10% or less. 2 of the Caliper pins (slid in and out with the lil'rubber boot) were rusted pretty tight and not nearly as fluid in motion. In our thinking that was the reason why the pads didnt' wear evenly.
1.) Can those pins be replaced or does the whole caliper need to come out?

The Caliper has 2 parts. 1 that hold the piston and the other that bolts to the wheel/strut (whatever you call it). Couldn't break lose the ones mounted to the car (the one without the piston). We did get the new pads installed. I don't drive the car everyday but eventually and probably rather quickly the pads will need to be changed again. I'm looking for some ideas on what to do next.

Thanks in advance,

-Kevin

I bought new pins at AZ for about $10 a side. That is if you can get the old ones out.

Mac,
Thanks I got your Mail.

The "frozen pins" are pretty well rusted in place as far as we (again...I don't work on my car alone. I always make sure I have a mechanic nearby to mock my attempts as I learn.) can tell. We tried to removed the brackets and couldn't get enough leverage to break them loose. We are going to try to use a propane torch to heat them up a bit and maybe that will break them free. shoot

Thanks for the advice!

That is by design. Mine have done that on the last 2 sets. Before anyone asks, My pine were replaced last year and have by greased 5 times with Castrol SYN grease. My Carbotechs were the same way the inner pad was worn more than the outter as well.

Side note I replaced the Carbotechs in the front in Jan as I had some time, I just installed some other type pad this weekend and figured it was time to grease the pins again, Flush the system and I found the rear carbotechs were shot.. (Inside pads) So the rears made it 2k more than the front. I was disapointed a little because of all the hype saying the rears do very little. I think they do way more than what is thought.

Either way 45k or so wasnt to bad on them pads :) The new ones I have installed (testing)Front only) seem to stop better than the carbotechs ever did. I dont know how they will run in a race, I guess Ill find out this week while at summit point.
