Really need some recommendations please.

Hi everyone,
So I just purchased a 2016 SHO for my wife yesterday and it definitely has some issues that I can’t seem to narrow down. Here are the symptoms...... While driving there is a loud hum and vibration throughout the whole car, faster you go the louder it gets. That’s not the worst part though......when turning it feels like something is binding really bad, sharper the turn the worse it is. Kinda feels like there is a bent rim that is catching/hitting on the bent part that want to bring the car to a stop. Regular straight driving isn’t really affected but a heavy pedal take off causes a similar sensation. Also noticed when in stop and go traffic there is a very pronounced thud and lurch when first touching the gas pedal and letting off. I have put the car on jack stands and went over everything, wheels are straight and tires are good (they are cheap though so I already ordered a new set). Did notice the rear toe links were shot so ran down to the dealer for a new set and put them in.......still no change, doing exactly what it did before. Went ahead and stuck a inspection cam in the fill hole on the PTU and we’ll, has fluid but it’s filled with glitter so I ordered a new one. So far I’m now $20k in the car and am really hoping one of you pro’s could help out with some guidance as I have never owned a SHO before and would hate to just keep throwing parts at it. U got it. Ptu bearing. Use on blaster liberally

Thanks for the fast response. Makes me fee a bit better now knowing I’m at least on the right track. New PTU should be in later today so I’ll get it on over the weekend and update once it’s done. On a side note, should I go ahead and tap a drain plug in the new one before it goes in so I can service it In the future ?

But, used dealer I bought it from offered to make it right however it’s 4 hours away and his mechanic missed all of it so I really don’t want them touching it again. We settled on me taking care of it and him reimbursing me.......we’ll see if he sticks to it though. I’m also taking some responsibility since I did know something was wrong with it but was ignorant and assumed it was bad tires and bought the car as is anyway.

Isn't there a recall on the tow links? You might check into this if you paid for them.

Most definitely tap for the drain plug. [mention]Ecoboost_xsport [/mention] makes a great set for the transmission, PTU and rear end unit.

In Canada it's all tauruses in certain provinces. Weird and kind of cheap that they'd only tap the performance packs in the US.

I'm not sure if I missed it somewhere in here... but I'd check for play in your hub assemblies before buying that PTU... just in case. IF it's hub, there would be quite a bit of play with the symptoms you're describing. ‍

I have a loud humming noise that increases with acceleration as well, but I know that's the rear wheel bearings starting to scream at me.

I would definitely check the wheel/hub assemblies for play. I know one of they key diagnostics for bad wheel bearings is a loud droning noise that gets louder as you accelerate.

The binding noise could be your struts, especially when turning. I had to get mine replaced at around 108k miles.

The lurching could be your PTU or it could be your transmission throwing a fit. A lot of dudes here use Redline Shockproof or Mecron in their transmissions for a drain and fill. I know when the PTU is on it's way out, you'll hear a whining noise.

This is just my experience. You could always take it to a mechanic and spend the $50-$100 diagnostic fee and have them give you a list of what is all needed.

Hey everyone, checking back in. So I finally finished today. Replaced the PTU and end up doing pads and rotors too. All for nothing though as I took it for a drive and well.......vibration is gone but the humming/light grinding noise is still there and it’s still binding when turning. I checked all the hubs while I was in there and they all seemed fine, I did however notice that there was a ton of grease that has slowly spewed out of the driver front cv axle, but again it seemed fine. I can’t determine if it’s coming from the front or rear but with it only doing it when turning it points to something upfront....right? At this point I’m just not sure what’s causing the binding. My driveway has a pitch so I can’t get all 4 off the ground but I have an appointment next week for tires and alignment so I’ll have them at least try to see what is wrong. Still driving me nuts though, is it the front cv, the rear diff, the trans or maybe a rear cv ??????

He actually made right and paid for everything I needed including the toe links. Really surprised me to be honest.

I did check them all and they “seem” fine but I’m going to check again as the new PTU made no change at all.

Do you know where it's coming from? Worst case scenario, there are some mechanics that have a microphone setup that they install in several spots under the car to listen to while driving to pinpoint. Is there anything fresh from the axle connection to the tranny? Maybe someone had one out and didn't get it set correctly. Maybe it's starting to fail. Maybe half shaft or something starting to go? Wheel bearings?
