Okay, I purchased my 98' a week 1/2 ago, filled it up the night of the purchase with 91 octane, and when I got home the whole perimeter of the car smelled of raw gas, and the service engine light came on. After a few visits to the Ford dealership (yes, I do have a 12 month drive-train warranty) they sourced a faulty air-intake celanoid, replaced it, gave the car back to me with no light, yet there's still the smell of raw fuel! I've checked the fuel pump, filter, and any visible lines for leakage or dampness and there is none.

Maybe the carbon canister...? The SES lamp may not have been related. The car is equipped with a EVAP system that will purge fuel vapor, and the carbon canisters purpose in life is to **** the fuel odor. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. Also, I noted your last post. Powertrain warranty or not, get your cams welded.

Here's something else; the smell gets extremely stronger the harder i drive the car, as in the higher velocities while cornering. Also, I'm kind of new to the SHO world so what is consisted in welding the cams?

Do you only smell it inside the car, or outside as well? Worse on the inside than the outside?

If you can't find a visible leak, you may have a hole somewhere in the top of the tank. This will ocassionally set a CE light because the EVAP system should sense it. It also may be sloshing every now and then.

If you smell it very strong inside the car, the fuel pump O-ring may be the culprit. If the fuel pump was ever removed for testing or replacement, the O-ring may have been left out or destroyed. It will allow gas fumes to leak into the cabin from under the floorboards.

I know with my car once in a while when I really get on the gas I get a rotten egg smell inside the car, especially with the heater/AC on. Many other SHO owners have experienced the same thing. Shouldn't be there with just normal driving though Mr. Leadfoot. ;)

I would get a fuel smell when I was ******* it. It was the carbon canister like I mentioned.

YOU MUST GET YOUR CAMS WELDED. ONLY AN OPTION IF YOU DO NOT LIKE YOUR CAR, OR HAVE FUN FIXING A DEFECTIVE DESIGN.

A sulfur smell could be caused by a bad cat or if it's musty smelling, it could be water in the Evap core.

Yes, weld the cams. I don't have a genIII (but I want the engine!) so I don't know what it costs. I do know that you don't want your car to vomit it's cams when the sprockets snap off. Some on the forum refer to this mod as "Kirk'd" on account that Kirk welded them up. I think he does them at the conventions too.

There are Kirk and many others that can perform the service. My 98 and 97 SHO was welded by Eric so should I call that Eric'ed? :p

The http://www.v8sho.com will tell you everything you need to know about cam faliure in these cars and why it is important to weld your cams ASAP.

between $500 and $800...
$500 for camweld only, and more towards $800 for camweld, insulating rear wire harness, spark plugs, cleaning of intake, etc...

There is a wire harness that FORD so strategically placed literally on the rear valve cover. It will eventually melt and breakdown. Kirk wraps it in a thermal protective wrap.
The cam weld obviously requires removal of the cam covers... so you are right there at it. :)

well, I filled the car up with gas today and noticed a HUGE gas leak coming right off the back of the tank. I'm talking about a quart of gas was spewing out from an area that's not visible from just looking under the car, and the attendant didn't top off the tank either. But it is going to the dealer in about 2 hours from now. But the first thing i'm going to do after all these little kinks are gone is cam welding for sure.

Right.... the finale is that there was indeed a pinched fuel line right above the tank and the dealership had to drop the tank and order a new line and fuel pump seal. So finally I think my sho's back in order.
