Hello, I need help. I am taking the car in soon to get looked at but if I dont have to I dont want to.

Ok, I have a 93 atx with 133,000 miles. It's had its 60k done. My problem is the car will just stall at random. Whether driving down the road or sitting at a stop light the car will just die. From what I can tell I am getting fuel and spark. The car runs EXCELLENT when its running. Now, when it stalls, it will not start for a while afterward, this is what sucks. I can crank on it and crank on it all I want but it wont start untill I let it sit for about half hour 45 minutes. After which it will run EXCELLENT untill it stalls again. When it stalls, the battery light and the oil light stay illuminated on the dash if that helps.

If anyone has had this problem or something like this let me know what was wrong....Help...

The problem is more than likely your CPS, your best bet would be to pull codes first to see if anything comes up.

Does your waterpump leak or did it recently in the past, seems to be a common reason why CPS goes out...

It's not any easy or cheap job unfortunatly, do a search for more information! :thumb:

OK, the car stalled a few times again today alone. When it did today I got a low coolant light on the dash. When the car fired up It stayed there. I checked the level when I got home and there is no coolant in the reserviour at all. This may sound dumb but is there supposed to be coolant in the white reserviour? This leads me to believe that the water pump thing that I have been reading about on this site is what this could be. Any input is cool ya'll, thanks.

Yes there should be some coolant in the resevior.

$10 says your waterpump is leaking onto the CPS causing it to short out.

You need a new waterpump and CPS. ;)

I am having the same problem with my 91 mtx. I notice a little rad leak, but none around the water pump. I didn't get any spark when I checked after the car stalled. Is that the only reason that the cps goes is the water pump is shot, or do they fail after so long?

My cps failed at 160,000 miles with no noticeable coolant leak.
Although the previous owner had a new pump installed about a year before.

One of the main things w/ the cps going is that the tachometer won't usually read correctly. Usually ZERO. The computer uses the signal from the cps to send the signal to the dash. (And so it knows when to fire the sparkplugs!!!!)

Check the codes, the cps almost always shows up in the codes.

The CPS cannot short out as it is a sealed sensor unit.

However, the thermal shock of hot coolant on it can cause it to intermittently open internally.

Next time it fails to start, check for spark WHILE IT IS IN FAILURE MODE. A faulty CPS will never permit the system to generate any spark. If you get spark (in time) but it still won't start, the CPS is fine.

Sarg: I had something similar happen with a RANDOM periodic stall with CEL on. But since you have spark & fuel and had the batt & oil light come on-yours could be a different issue than mine. My stalling came from a bad FUEL PUMP starting to fail before 60K. The car would randomly leave me on the side of the road (twice)- it would also randomly startup again first couple of times anywhere between 5->10 minutes later. Then it finaly crapped: where I needed tow truck. That was my experience. Good luck.
