So I was cruising home today when my engine died for no reason... I was doing around 35mph or so and I braked to a stop, tried to start it... but it would only crank... the tach would move when I cranked (not sure what the cps symptoms are).

Right around that time I also smelled smoke, was that maybe from a bad cps and its inability to start?

I popped the hood and messed with my throttle control (which got messed up the other night when my cruise cable went to ****...) afterwards it started back up and ran, but I know this is going to happen again. What's my problem?

It would be a good first step to retrieve any EEC codes that have been stored in memory. If it was the CPS that failed, it may have stored the identifying code. You said that you smelled smoke. What kind of smoke? Electrical? Burning oil? Burning coolant? Need more input.

If the engine cuts out again, watch the tach. With the engine still in gear and spinning, if the tach is setting on the zero peg, then it is the CPS.

Thanks a lot Scott, I'm going to go retrieve the codes in a second... I have not really familiarized myself with specific smoke (coolant vs oil etc...) but if I had to take a guess I'd say oil.

A few minutes ago I also discovered that my front motor mount is broken. (did the test, and it lifts up way too much) not to mention the pieces of the hood insulator stuck on the intake... and my exhaust trying to move around under the car. Sheeesh :(

I ran the codes, KOEO: 15 and 11.

It seems that the first test failed? And the second revealed no problems? What can you guys tell me! Thanks.

- Brian

[EDIT] I also received a code 13 during the KOER test.

Has it ever fired back up after it cooled or is it dead in its track. As for the smell. Coolant has somwhat of a sweet and kinda pleasant smell. Oil is a nose curlin smell.

It fired back up after a minute or so... it didn't cool down all that much. I'm gonna stick with oil burning for the smell, I smelled coolant burn when I test drove an '89 that was dripping coolant all over the exhaust. This wasn't it.

I would suggest makeing sure your fuel pump isn't overheating and shutting down. Sound like a fuel or CID failure which are both heat related. I would say fuel pump cause the motor wouldn't have cooled down enough for the CID in just a few min.

Right after is stalls turn the key off then back on and listen for the fuel pump. If its not priming then it could be the relay box on top of the radiator. This has the fuel pump relay inside of it.
