1st question/annoyance:
This only occurs when starting off in my 1991 SHO, after the car has been sitting for more than about 6 or 7 hours. It happens no matter whether I have or haven't set the e-brake, had to backup out of a parking space or just taken off in first gear. Anytime between the instant the clutch has been all the way released and about 1.5 seconds after release, I get a brief, prounounced crunch, like a very short grind, as though something is slipping into/out of place. It can be felt in both the clutch and accelerator pedals. This is a one-time occurence until the car has sat for 6-7 hours again. The sound seems to emmanate from the drivers side of the engine compartment, but it is hard to tell because I can't stand outside the car and listen. Had a new clutch and flywheel installed in early Nov. 2002, has less than 3k miles on it. I have tried rolling out in neutral, with the clutch released, but the noise doesn't occur until I shift into first, let out the clutch, then crunch.

2nd question/annoyance:
Occurs under similar circumstances as above: car has sat for about 7 hours, I start out moving, shift into second, and all the way through first and up to 3000 rpm in second, it feels as though I have reduced power, as though the e-brake were sticking or something similar. But, once I pass 3000 rpm in 2nd, I have power again, and will for the rest of the ride, through all gears throughout the powerband. Power loss isn't huge, and doesn't feel evident at very low speeds, <10mph.

What could be causing these things to occur? I have searched the forums and haven't found anything quite describing these things.

I had considered that, but because the problem goes away after it happens the first time through 1st and 2nd gear, I don't think it is a slipping clutch.
It acts just fine the rest of the time I am driving it.

Welcome Lurch. The 1st condition you describe has been discussed and documented on several SHO discussion areas. The sound eminates from the transaxle and is not a malfunction or problem, but an operating "characteristic" of the MTX SHO. Mine has done it throughout all of its 271,500 miles as did my 1989 SHO.

The second condition sounds like an engine control situation where the engine operates in "open loop" control mode until the engine warms to a certain temperature. At that point, the control system changes to "closed loop" mode where all of the sensors are used to control the spark and fuel values.

You should not be asking great amounts of power output from a cold engine. Allow it to warm to normal operating temperatures and enter the closed loop mode before you give much throttle or apply much load to the engine. It will be happier and live much longer if you observe these concepts.

Your situation does sound like there may be a less than optimal condition. It may be that you parking brake or brake caliper is sticking or that a spark plug or wires is old or not the proper part for the job. Check the rear brakes by making sure that the wheels rotate freely after applying and releasing the parking brake and the brake pedal.

What brand of spark plugs are installed? The should be only the Motorcraft AGSP32PP double platinum that is the only plug designed specifically for the SHO engine. They should be gapped to .042"-.046". The wires should be the Motorcraft WR-4033 and if more than about 5 years old, could be ready for a refreshment.

Thanks sdpatt. I bet that the situation you described with open and closed loop control is what is causing this, since you mentioned engine temperature. It happens much more rarely whenever the car has warmed about 10 minutes in my driveway, but almost always happens on my way home from school, where I simply back out of my space and go. The weird part is that I hadn't noticed the hesitation until a couple weeks ago, and I have had the car since Oct. 2002. I do not know what plugs and wires are on it. The previous owner left about 3 notepad pages of maintenance notes dating from '96 to '99, and wires/plugs aren't mentioned being changed. When it comes back from getting it's brake job either this afternoon or tomorrow I'll look and see. Also, I suspect it hasn't been 60k'ed either, and it has 76k on it now. Does anyone know of a good SHO mechanic near Knoxville, TN?
