My 1990 SHO w/ 97K miles the RH volume is only about half of the left?
When I through the balance to the right the volume drops in half, any ideas?
Amp?, and if so which one or how can I test?

Thanks

Personally i would upgrade the entire system, i.e. all speakers & headunit. But if you really want to diagnose it, i would start with the speaker wires & inspection of the speakers themselves. Ther're probably blown or have a loose wire. I'm going to replace mine when i get back to the states. If that isn't you're problem, then it is probably the headunit. You gotta think, how many people have mashed the crap out of the buttons or just used them thousands of times before you? Hope this give you a start! p.s. also check the wires going into the amps to make sure they are plugged in all the way and are not worn/ grounding out..

Thanks all I will check, I did p/u an extra speaker at a salvage yard and it is the stock head unit. Everything on this car is stock, 3 previous owners, all local, and the 1st owned her from 10/90-04/2006. I Bought Sept 09 w/ 95,536 miles for 2k and now have another $2500 into her-great car.
the car has been called "museum" quality by other Shofourm members
I printed up your answers and will start checking-thanks
here is an interior pic:

Looks great! Are those full leather seats or split? It's kind of hard to tell with the brightness. Either way, very clean!

(Woohoo for my 100th post. A month ago I had 20....)

not to sound stupid, but did you check the FADE?
I'm assuming the speakers are the stock originals?
Also, I know you said RH side, have you confirmed it is the same for both front and rear speakers on the RH side?

Those 2 gray plugs look just like the speaker plugs - you do have rear speakers in right?

They could possibly go the the subwoofer, but in that case, there would only be one

I checked fade & the speakers are hooked up.
They do work the LH is fine but when I balance to the right side it looses about 70% volume as if the amp for the RH side is broken

Me too. 91 JBL with gen II head and CD. right side front and back is 60 to 70% less volume than the left side. Have a spare gen II head that i tried to swap and when I did NO speakers worked. But the head works in the Gen II I took it out of.

P.S. that mocha interior looks sick as **** and I hate mocha. Damn that thing is nice.

I have the same problem in my 91. I love music so it bugs the heck out of me. Except mine doesn't work on the left hand side.

Keep working on the original system in the car. It was a $486.00 option in 1990 compared to air conditioning which was $184.00. Be prepared to test components in and out of the car, someone can diagnose and fix it. Your museum piece will thank you.

ditto

I agree, even though I'm having the same problem and it is indeed VERY frustrating. But its worth the bragging rights when people say, "damn your system bumps what is it?" ............ stock :omgsho:

BTW my factory sub amp doesn't look like yours. Its silver and in the same position as the Gen II sub amp. (under the keyless entry control on the left) I'm sure its all the same stuff I just like pointing out the subtle nuances in bone stock SHO's. Even Ford couldn't builds cars to original Ford specs. lol.

P.S. Keep your head up guys I'm taking my car to a close family friends ford dealership to let them figure it out. I'm a mechanic not an electrician. I'll post after diagnosis.
