Radio...again

So here's the deal, I cannot live with the POS factory radio in my car any more. I already have a new head unit and all that wonderful stuff here is the nex question. I am in the process of molding a new cover piece for the stock headunit. I bought clay and made a mold of what i want. Unfortunately, the clay is not the firmest of material. I was thinking about using plaster of paris because it hardens and is sandable and then i can lay fiberglass in it and create the new face. This is key because then i can fill the radio hols and relocate some buttons (i already have the wiring thing worked out. my main question is...Does the plaster seem like a good idea?

I would go with fiberglass, it is pretty light, strong and very easy to shape and mold. I am thinking about doing the same in my SHO now that I found the CD and other controls are not in the same unit. Keep me posted on the progress.

Fiberglass for the finished product, i agree, my question is do you think that making a plaster cast is the best way to go, I have trierd clay and it is too flimsy. Also take a look at my site, i have my CD player where the ashtray used to be.

I dont know of too many other choices that you would have to make the mold with. I made a mold before using play-doe and some glue. It gives you enough time to shape it the way you want before it hardens. It took alot of glue but I was able to use it when I layed the fiberglass. I didnt use store brand play-doe because it flakes too much but you can probally find a recipe on the net at make some up that will not be so flaky. I hope this might help. Keep me posted. Nice stereo set up by the way. Do you have a lot of rattles?

the plaster mold is done, i am now in the process of sanding and shaping. My main question is does anyone know how to lay the fiberglass without it getting stuck to the plaster and keeping the size and shape exact?

There are a fair number of systems to prevent the eposy resin used in fiberglassing from sticking to the mold. However, they tend to vary with the particular epoxy type that you are using, and there are a lot of those. That is, what works well with say East system, might not work anywhere near as well with Bright system. I suggest you might want to contact the epoxy manufacturer, either by email or just by looking around on their site for that exact information, perhaps in their FAQs.

I looked into the whole fiberglassing thing. and for my plaster mold i need
Wax #2
PVA parting compound
Gelcoat
3/4 or 1oz mat
Catalyed resin

Does anyone know where to get this stuff?
it is not at home depot or lowes, Pepboys (sorry) has a jelly resin, a norman resin but none of the other stuff.

2,4shofast - sorry about missing part of your question, it used to rattle everywhere, and I have laid Dynamat in the trunk and took the advice of some buddies and sprayed the spare tire well area underneath the car with some soundproofing spray....I know it is delayed I haven't been around to look at the posts, that and I have been trying to get this mold thing to work for me.
