My alternator just started making some nasty racket. It sounds like the bearings are eating themselves. Kind of like the belt squeal from ****, and only audible at an idle.

My question is simple:

What year SHOs share the same alternator as the '89?
I have one pulled from a '91, and it LOOKS like it would bolt up, but I not sure.
And if it would bolt up, is it a direct replacement? Are they rated the same?

Thanks!

Im not 100% sure but I think all alternators from 89-91 are the same. They are all rated the same 90A IIRC. Shotimes has a good writeup on what you can use for what year. Check it out to be sure :thumb:

90 amp alternator - All 89-93 MTX

The one from the 91 will fit and bolt right up. It is a direct replacement and is rated the same providing that someone didn't change it out which is unlikely since it's a PITA to convert the MTX over to ATX style alternators.

Kenny, also keep in mind that getting an alternator rebuilt is a fairly simple thing to do. If you take it to a shop that does that you can get that done for a fraction of the cost of getting a new one.

Thanks everyone.

Except for the pulleys being slightly different sizes, it was a direct ft. I did swap pulleys though, to retain the larger more "underdrive" pulley.

I also found out why my AC want working, and why it would take a charge!
When I pulled the Alternator out, what do I see? The flippin' AC compressor plug dangling loose. it came unplugged!

So, no more alternator noises, and now I have AC :snicker:
oh yeah, life is good :D
