Welcome to the SHOFORUM. Use a good quality name brand in a 5 w 20 or 10 w 30 if you're in a hot area. Don't go thicker than 10 w. Castrol, Valvoline, Shell Rotella, Delo 400 are all good oils.

Keep in mind that regular oil changes with any oil is better than no changes with a great oil.

Also, as you may have noticed, the starter lies directly below the oil filter. Be sure to use something to protect the starter from being covered with oil when you remove the filter. Some people cover the starter with a plastic bag, while others have made a trough to let the oil pour away from the starter. I made a trough out of a milk jug. It has worked for me for 2 and a half years.

If you want the best go with Redline synthetic 10w30 or 10w40.

Mobil 1 is also very good, some folks use Castrol GTX, but I recommend a full synthetic.

If the car is an MTX, use the Motorcraft FL1A; if an ATX use the stock FL400.

This last change I used 0w-30 Castrol Syntec... The made-in-Germany stuff. Seems to work well in my SHO (although any xw-30 SL rated would I'm sure). Will probably run it for 6,500-7k miles.
Don't use a Fram oil filter. I use Wix; they are top-notch for the money. Just use anything but Fram. Motorcraft's can be had cheap and are a good choice.

If you go with a dino oil, use a 10w-30 flavor during spring/summer/fall and 5w30 in the winter..helps minimize shearing.

I'll second the Castrol 0W-30. I've been using it for over a year in the SHO now with no issues. The first time I used it seemed i was pouring olive oil in my crankcase because the oil has a greenish tint to it.
If you do go looking for this oil make sure it reads "Made in Germany" in the back.

Make sure you put the oil drain pan a good twelve or so inches behind the drain plug, first time i changed mine I was suprised how far it shot out. Can be very messy. I would recomend a sure drain, walmart for like 13 bucks. It is basically a check valve that you install in place of the factory oil plug. After installation whenever you change the oil you just screw a rubber hose with a pin inside it on, the pin pushes the ball valve open, and the oil drains through the hose, right into the drain pan. Ive had mine on my 94 for about two years now and i love it. Save for a few drops from the filter, no oil even touches the ground. Walmart sells the OEM motorcraft filters for like two bucks, can beat it.
