Question..Torque problem on a 91?

Test drove a 91 Plus today, looking to buy it. When I drove the car, the engine seemed to run fine all the way through, but there was very little torque, so little that when I mashed it in first gear it felt worse than my 3.0 Vulcan SLO. I also could hear a slight ticking under the hood, not sure if this is related. The owner seemed to think the ticking was in the clutch bearing. Any thoughts? Thanks!

What was the mileage? Any 60k's done? Check the plug well's for oil.

The car had 148k and he says all the 60k work, valves, even waterpump were done around 100k. He also said he tried replacing the plugs and waterpump recently to try to fix the problem. The car was fine after the 60k, and has just developed this problem recently. The problem did not seem to be the secondaries, as the car very little low end torque. I realize the car may be a little doggy b/c the miles, but this is definatly way more than the norm. I drove a 190k car the other day that was twice as strong.

If the secondaries are staying open at low RPMs you will definitely loose lots of low end torque. Secondaries are spring loaded to be open when the engine is not running. When the engine starts vacuum closes them. Look to see if they close as the engine starts.

Yes.

Both Scott P and I have posted routing descriptions.

Click on SEARCH, enter "secondaries vacuum line" and either of our member numbers (mine is 1084, Scott's # is 51). One of my posts has a phooto of the connections on the rear of the intake maniflod.

There should be a vacuum routing diagram under the hood of the 91. Given its age, it may well be gone.
