Not even sure if i called the part correctly but this is what i need.

I am getting real close to put the motor that I have been restoring back in my 90 sho

Question I have is the black lead and red lead that goes from starter/battery terminal over to the starter relay on the drivers side fender. They are bolted by a 14 mm nut i believe.

Best I can explain it ... question is ... which cable goes where ... does red sit on top and the ground on the bottom or vice versa... took the motor out a mth ago and forgot !

the two large terminals on the end of the solenoid - one of them has a cable into the starter itself. the red wire goes on the other of those two large terminals. the black wire goes onto one of the bolts that holds the starter to the transmission - it is the ground path.

The Gen 1 starter is different. It's been a few years since I've played with a Gen 1 starter, so I can't answer your question, Don.

thanks .... I will try to be more specific .... this is the relay that is bolted to the fender well up high near the strut tower. Drivers side

You have a starter cable and cables coming from the battery that hook to it. These are massive cables. You have a ground( black) and positive( red) cable that bolts to this relay.

I just cant remember since its been so long since i took the motor out which side is on top and which one is below .... hopefully this description will help

Its not the starter.

Okay, first things first. The ground cable does not go to the relay. It goes to a bolt/stud that holds the starter to the bell housing.

Second: the starter solenoid/relay is bi-directional. It passes the positive 12 volts through it in either direction.

One side of that solenoid should have a single, large gauge cable coming directly from the positive post on your battery, and a bunch of smaller gauge wires (10 gauge or smaller) that feed things that are supposed to be hot at all times. The smaller wires here are probably all of the Fusible Link type, meant to heat up and melt if too much current is drawn through them.

The other side of that solenoid should have a single, large gauge cable that connects to the large insulated post of the starter.

The small post on the solenoid is the trigger. When this trigger receives 12 volts from the ignition switch by way of the clutch safety interlock switch, it operates the relay, connecting the two big posts of the relay together. Sometimes there are two small posts; in this case, one is the trigger and the other is the grounding lug for the trigger circuit. Just like the bigger posts, it doesn't matter which is ground and which is trigger, it bi-directional.

I hope this helps.

The cables that go to the two post solenoid on the fender well .... one is black and one is red .. doesnt matter which goes where

I second Tom's statement. I just went through this last month. That picture is also accurate.

Both of those cables are black, one just has a piece of red heat shrink on the end. Never go by color coding on battery cables; always trace them back to their source of power.

According to that pic: the little wire on top should come from your clutch interupt switch. The post on the left should be the positive battery cable and all the fussible links. The large cable on the right should go to the starter's large, insulated post.

A big assumption I and probably others have been making in this thread is that you have a Gen 1 starter that does NOT have a solenoid of its own on the side. If in fact someone has changed it out for a Gen 2 starter, you will still be able to use it, you will just have to wire it differently.

HTH.
