The past month or so my 93 ATX has been acting a little weird headbang . Every once and a while when you give it normal gas accerating it will like not have any power, almost like it is choking, but then if you are like "what the ****" and floor it, it corects itself and still performs normally just like it always has. It is weird. Does anyone know what is going on? shrug Thanks.

Yeah, check the codes, and check your plug wires. Look for little burned spots where wires touch each other, and where they touch the engine. (valve covers, t-stat housing, intake manifold, etc.) Crossfiring and arcing wires will **** your idle and low end, but act more normal at higher RPM.

By the way, I like your sig pic.

Could someone tell this newb what the heck you mean by checking the codes? I R not understand. And as long as I am asking dumb newbie questions, how do you know which gen is which?

Thanks

Does it only run well at full throttle?

This could be significant because the engine computer uses a different strategy that ignores most of the sensors under full-throttle conditions. If an engine mysteriously runs much better under full throttle than other conditions it could mean one or more of the various sensors (oxygen, MAF, etc., etc.) are faulty.

Gen. 1's are 89-91 SHO's 92-95 are Gen. 2's. Gen 2's have a different body style (front bumper, headlight ass.,rear bumper, interior) and with a gen 2 you had the option of an automatic transmission except on those mut 92's :D J/K. All gen 1's came with a 5spd.
To check the codes you have to find the triangular plug on the passenger side firewall. It says EEC on it. You will need to purchase a code reader at sears or use a paper clip. I've never used a paper clip but you have to watch the CE light flashes. The first one is just to show you did it right. You can also go to autozone and they will do it for free. Good luck and there is a write up on SHOtimes.com about reading codes and a lot of other useful info.

Eric,

Is there a way to test the MAF sensor with an Ohm Meter across a couple of the pins? And have you ever replaced one on your 95? Ford only sells the entire MAF, airflow housing and sensor and it's gold according to Ford.

I don't think this is related, but I thought it worth mentioning anyway.

I had a '92 Cav that had no power like that after a while and it turned out the catalytic converters had plugged themselves, so if I gave it more than about 10% throttle it would blow a chunk of debris in front of the exhaust exit.

However, the problem didn't go away when I mashed the pedal, and this car was a stick not auto.

Like I said, I doubt this would be the problem as it sounds like it's definitely more complicated, but I thought it worth mentioning. shrug

does your instrument cluster turn on and off and everything do crazy things. cause thats what my she was doing and i'm pretty sure now that my ircm is bad. mine won't start but when it was running it would get all jerky and stuff would shut off due to lack of power. if it is your ircm(intreagrated relay control module) its gunna cost about 150 bucks. but good luck
