So.. apologies in advance... I'm an idiot when it comes to cars. If I do the LED conversion with a 9012 fitment conversion kit, does this bypass my ballast? Or do I still need a functioning ballast for the LED lights to work? My driver's side headlight is out, but it's the ballast and not the bulb. I'm wondering if I switch to LED if I still need to replace the ballast first. Thanks for the help!

9012 fitment? 9012 is a halogen HIR usually used for low beams (some are dual beam). Your 2016 should have a D3S HID. That being said, your housing is not made for LED bulbs. You can pick up a ballast for $50-100. Then if you want better lights, I would grab some Osram Xenarc Laser Night Breakers.
Dont have to buy them from this site, however you can - and these are the ones @Ta2dResqr is speaking about.

As long as your car came equiped with D3S HID headlights then yes.

From that site, these are the ones I use. The cool blue does not give you as much light and is more for looks.

Yes. They are a D3S bulb like OEM. They meet all D3S requirements including stock wattage.
I am replacing all the exterior lights for that "New, gleaming look" that new lenses bring.
My scenario:
My 2011 has the stock HID lights, and they still work fairly nicely.
And while I do like the HID look and effect, they DO run a bit hot. Especially here in the hot desert summers.
Also, pair of light assemblies for HID are rarer now and more expensive - to the tune of around $1,000 shipped for the pair...(yikes)
So I was considering swapping out to LED, for something different, cooler temp, and a little cheaper.
My Question:
Could I / should I save a few hundred bucks to just put new halogen, projector style lights in?
I would immediately swap out the halogen for LED bulbs...
But what would that require? Could I just swap them and omit the ballast / ignitors? Or do I still need the ballast if I swap?
Also, will the projector assemblies fit the same as the stock HID assemblies...screw holes and whatever?
Anyone got any solid recommendations out there?
