Hey all had my sho for about a year. I was wondering when you first fire these cars up when they are cold do they make a slight valve train noise?

Like when i first start it it has a slight valve clatter it will go away when it is warm after liek 10-15 mins. . I asked my friend who has had his for a while he said they do make that sound normally.

it's got 105k miles. I ran semi synthetic eni oil for not even 1000 miles took it out because it leaked to much.

Welcome!!! Can you make a video and post a link to it? Don't have an oil light or CEL do you? What are the ambient temps like? What do you put in for oil & filter?

Thank you! I'm gonna try and get a video tomorrow. I have no lights on except an abs light. Not sure what the ambient temperature is at but the from i what i see on the dash its usually stays cool. I put mobil1 conventional 5w30 and an stp oil filter because its all they had.

Almost sounds like valve lash or lack of oil. it's not really a knock or tick either. But I am not used to this motor yet. it has brand new motocraft platinum plugs new coils. new iac, egr , tps crank sensor. otherwise seems to drive fine doesn't seem slow or anything.

Run like heck from STP oil filters. Please put on a Motorcraft filter first chance you get, they are pretty awesome for an OEM product.

Is 5W30 OEM spec for the oil, Mobil conventional should be fine, though at least for the prev gens, Castrol GTX does a bangup job.

Yes, they do make a slight valve lash clatter when cold. Mine goes away after a few minutes.

The ABS light is very possibly the pump if everything else is still working. No longer any left in the supply line, unfortunately, and ones from the junk yard are often dead also. Very irritating.

I agree it is best to stick with Motorcraft filters if you can. What is the leak, though?

So, welcome, and hope the car works out well for you. :)

There are three main chain tensioners in the engine. One under the front cover for the big timing chain and one under each valve cover for the secondary timing chains. They are all inflated under oil pressure.
The tensioner glide rails in the secondary chain tensioners gets worn on engines past 100k - some better, some worse depending on previous maintenance. When worn, these tensioners don't put as much pressure on the secondary chains and the slave cam tends to get a little slack and chatter as the cam rotation resistance switches back and forth going over cam lobe tops.

When the engine heats up, everything spins a little freer, the oil flows a little better, and everything shuts up.

Yah i spoke to one guy who said one of the chain tensioners wore down and clogged the oil pickup line. Any sounds I have always go away at 10 mins or so of driving even in 30-40 degree weather the sound ofc follows rpm. one of my leaks were the cam lip seal that I replaced. The oil pan leaks a little bit. The sound almost sounds like a tiny rod knock or something but can rod knock go away when warm? The sound can def be heard inside the cabin. what do i do if chain tensioners get to worn? Oh and I'm not talking about injector tick. I also stuck my finger in the oil cap and looked in there with a flash light the front top of the motor is def getting oil.

Well i took a video but you can't really hear the sound I'm talking about. I can hear it but gotta listen closely.

Oh and about the ABS module I went and clean the connector and diaelectric greased it. I also changed the front speed sensors because they were cheap and easy. so if its not one of the rears I am screwed.

I can't hear what you are talking about. I have listened several times.

Here is what I think. I am not one of these people who hocks a "miracle in a can" type fixes. I know stuff loosens up as it wears. I don't know if these have hydraulic lifters. I have a 92 Prelude with a H22 in it that has a noisy lifter. I put a can of Lucas oil stabilizer in it, and that made it nearly silent. I have a friend who had a 2002 Expedition we ran that or STP thickener in for a lot of years that it made a huge difference in.

Give something like that a try. Best I can think of.
