So i recently picked up my first MTX. I am highly aware of the diff pin issues as the one in my old Mystique let go on me. Im probably going to change out the clutch and put in a stage 1 of some sort. So anyway my question is what to do with the trans. I plan on bringing the car up to the drag strip. I dont plan on heavily modding it for at least a few years so its probably just gonna have the basic upgrades bbb's, maf, ported intake, and y pipe. Should i weld the diff or try and get some money together and grab a Quaife. Im not too concerned about having a LSD i just wanna make sure i dont get a SHOBoom.

#1 Weld the stock diff asap
#2 Start saving for a Quaife or Wave Trac (worth every penny)

How difficult is it to weld the stock diff and which piece do you well. I know the trans has to come apart etc just wondering how powerful of a welder im going to need.

Not my picture but I saw it on here and thought it might be a good idea to save for future reference.

This is how I did mine. Once I had the trans apart I took the diff and the case to a machine shop to have welded. (the case was to insure clearance). My welded diff has withstood 2 seasons of autocross with a novice driver....this translates into alot of "One wheel peels" when leaving the corners. In the picture, the person welded supports to all 3 pins. I did not do this. I only did the 2 small ones since 95% of the time they are the ones that eject themselves. The long pin that goes all the way through has very minimal net force on it and is also spins from its center point (equal masses pulling agianst each other cancel each other out). The additional welds can also make the diff more out of balance that can lead to bearing wear. Some people have made a loop out of weldable steel and slipped it down around the diff instead of the angled supports to help with the balance.

With all that being said I would weld it immediately and then start saving your pennies. It should last a # of years being welded.

Does welding actually make the diff more durable or does it only keep it from destroying the trans case when it fails?

one might add that welding does nothing to address the lack internal diff lubrication, and the subsequent galling between the pins and spidergears. its that galling that causes the spider gears to grasp the diff pins and twist them, which shears/breaks the roll pins

What is it about burning out that rapes diffs? I spin my tires on the snow and ice all the time. Am I putting my tranny at risk?

When one wheel spins and not the other (open diff) it puts strain on the diff pins (makes them wiggle). The only thing holding the pin in is the small roll pins. These can shear off which means that the centrifical force from the diff spinning causes them to work there way out and then catch the case. On snow and ice it is inevitable that your tires will spin some....I would try and keep it as little as possible though. Just dont abuse the trans and you should be okay. If welding it is a possibility for you, I would recommend it.
