I own a 1994 MTX and a recently a tick has started to happed. My 1994 SHO 5sp has 128,000ish miles and there is no check engine light. So far I have replaced the: Water pump, Alternator, Battery, Serpentine belt, Wires,Plugs and Valve adjustment.

The tick from engine does not happen when the car is cold, only when the car starts to warn up. I can only hear the tick from the engine when the car is completly stopped. The tick is non-constant, and varies is the speed and sound the of the tick. The sound varies from a slow chugging like sound to very rapid/quick short tick. When I will have the car completly stopped sometimes there is no tick at all, other times there slow tick, other times there is a fast tick, yet sometimes the speed of the tick will change in speed e.g. the tick will start off like a slow chug like tick than right away after the that the will change to a fast short tick. I guess different way of describing this could be that tick will vary and and will change between slow and fast and fast and fast and slow the car is stopped. Also, The temp of the car is normal and never overheats.

What do you think could cause a tick like this? A radiator fan? A rod bearing maybe? or what do you think??

If I understand correctly, it happens AFTER you shut the car off.

If so, this is normal in many many cars-

Metal expands and contracts when it gets hot or cold. The metal in the block/ intake/ exhaust system gets heated up when you drive it. Then when it starts cooling off changes size slightly, and 'ticks'.

Metal (and concrete) changes so much with temperature that you see those huge bumps in bridges where they build room for it to expand/contract.

------------------------------------------
You can borrow (or buy, they're fairly cheap) a mechanic's stethoscope to see exactly where it's coming from, and make sure it's not happening with the car on and is something worth worrying about...

What I mean by when I say the car is stopped I mean like it is running and at a stop light or stop sign. The tick goes away after the car is turned off. Do you any idea of what the tick could be caused by?

Unadjusted valve lash

At about 118,000 miles I had the valves adjected, new plugs, and wires done at Mike Courtneys Truck Service in Eden Prairie MN. Do you think the valves became unadjusted some how even tho I just had them adjected less than 10k miles ago??

just an idea, how did your timing chain tensioners look when he did the valve adjustment? cause that sound you're describing sounds exactly like what mine's doing , and its my rear bank timing chain tensioner

I do not think I have ever had the timing chain tensionser ever looked at or changed. The only thing Mike Courtney did was the valve adjectment, plugs, and wires. Do you think the timing chain tensioners could cause the tick I described in the first post?

could it be belt slap? sounds like that might be it and your belt is starting to become really loose. when was the last time it was replaced?

I had the Serpentine belt replaced like 500 miles ago. Is there a anthor belt that cause 'belt slap'? When looking at the engine the tick sounds like comes from the left/lower part of the engine.

There are 3 belts on an MTX motor. 2 drive belts(Alt/AC & PS/WP) and a timing belt. New belts stretch. If you have had both of them replaced and you have not tightened them, or checked the tension, then they can very well be loose.

Does the varying speed of the "tick" coincide with engine speed?

As far as I can tell, the tick only seems to only happen when the car is stopped. The tick seems not to follow the engine speed. Have any idea?

clutch fork? that might sound like more of a "rattle" than a "tick," but it's possible.
You would generally hear the bearing and not the fork itself.

yeah sorry i meant the timing belt, duh stupid me. and here's another i idea i got while reshimming my valves. i noticed that there is a hydraulic tensioner on the camshaft chains, if that tensioner bleeds excesive pressure that could maybe cause what your hearing too.

Do you have any idea of how much a timing belt would cost to get fixed?
