Push-button start

My friend got a new '98 Jetta and as a car-warming gift, I got him this month's issue of EuroTuner. Inside there was an add for pushbutton starters (a la S2000) that you can install right in your cigarette lighter (with some wiring, of course).
Anybody looked into doing this for our cars? It would take some getting used to, I think, but it'd be pretty cool, too.

Many Cobra replica owners have adapted actual S2000 start buttons on their cars (turn key to "run", press button). You could probably adapt one for the SHO. If you'd like I can point you towards wiring threads, etc.

Yes, i drove an S2000 last summer and was surprised when i saw the push-button start. I thought it was pretty neat. I also thought about doing it for our cars and figured it would be hard if not impossible to do. if you come up with something, let me know, i'll be interested

It doesnt seem to hard to do: just cut the white with pink starter wire near the ignition switch, relay it, run it to a momentary push button switch mounted somwhere in the dash, then run the other side of the switch to a constant yellow wire. And of course fuse it.

You'd probably need another relay to cut off power to the accesories when the button is pushed. That's how the key switch works. Example :If the car was in gear (on an automatic) and you turn the key to start, the accesories turn off until the key comes back to run. The neutral safety switch (on Automatic cars anyways) won't allow the starter to run, obviously, when you do that, but the power gets shut off to the accesories in the start position. So that would have to be integrated in the mod as well.

I've spoken with some people that had it installed in their car and they said all the instructions came with the button. The instructions are apparently universal, at least that’s what the guy selling said.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea. My only worry would be if someone broke into my car, that it would be easier to steal. I don't know though, maybe I'm smoking crack...JK wink

Besides wiring the relay for the starter, get the buttons power from the accessory switch. That way the key needs to be in the ON position inorder for the switch to have the power to activate the relay.

If your worried about security that much why not a fuel cut-off? A few of the cars I get at work require for the left-blinker to on left/right then the car will actually start, or another I have seen is the radio face has to be in(aftermarket radio) and the vent on. Sounds like a PITA if in a hurry but great for security and can be used in almost anything electrical in the interior . There is a place locally that does this and sells kits, I might just do it for my SHO once I "re-do" my stereo.

Dont forget that without a key, the steering wheel is locked. Anyways if you drop the under dash panel, remove the two torx bolts that hold the ignition switch box onto the column, you can just manually work the pin on the ignition switch and start the car, no key needed. Just bypass the steering wheel lock, and you got yourself a free SHO.... thumbs_u

Poor Man's Fuel Cutoff Switch:

1) Walk toward rear quarter panel, passenger side.

2) Strike Quarter Panel, hard enough not to dent metal (obviously) but enough to trip fuel inertia switch.

3) Lock trunk from inside of car.

Now if anyone stole your car, the last thing he would probably think about is if the fuel inertia switch was tripped. Its not foolproof, but it may save your SHO one day. All you need to do before starting your car is push down the switch and you're off!

A lot cheaper than a starter ****, by no means a replacement. thumbs_u

That gave me a good laugh Tom. I could have saved myself 300 bucks if I thought about that before I put my alarm on. The cool remote is enough to have bought the alarm as I have one of those two ways that can monitor the car and has a neat display.

You can do it from inside the trunk as well. Just give it a "Fonzie rap", then of course, get out before you close it. wink
