Ok..I am starting to tear things apart. To remove the front cover, I am guessing that all the pulleys must be removed.???
Is there a way to remove the balancer without a puller? Any secrets or hidden things to lookout for while doing this?
I couldn't find a writeup on just doing the front cover. I need to get the head off to see what damage has been done. Any help moving forward would be great.
Thanks

The pulleys are no problem or anything else. But the dampener will need a pulley puller. Cheap to buy or rent for nothing at AutoZone.

Found a puller on HF for 9.99. It should be ok for every now and then use.

Be sure it uses bolts and not claws to pull it off.

Ok..Thanks. But out of curiousity, is that because the claws won't fit behind or that is just a different style and can't be done?

Use the right tool for the right job. A jaw type puller has no business being near a harmonic balancer/crank pulley unless you've got an extra $100 handy to buy a new pulley.

As Paul mentioned, AutoZone will loan you the correct harmonic balancer puller for FREE, you just have to leave a deposit (should be around $20) until you return it, which should take all of about 3 minutes.

Thanks. I haven't used a puller in years! So I didn't really know the reason.

The jaw type will bend the back edge of the pulley in and ruin it.

Ok...bought the puller. Tried all kinds of different bolts that came with it. Nothing seems to work. Apparently it is very rusty in the holes. Does anyone know for sure what size bolts should be used on the balancer?
Thanks

I've been trying the M8 and it just doesn't want to thread in. It is prob. too rusty. I will get a bottom tap on Wed. and clean it up and try again.

Thanks!

Well, I ran a tap through it and cleaned it up. It wasn't a bottom tap so I couldn't get all the way in. I put on the puller I bought from HF. Bad deal. that balancer wasn't budging. It ended up breaking the puller. It will be returned Friday. I went ahead and borrowed one from Murrays. It took a bit but it finally came off. The screws kept feeling like they were stripping out. I was getting verrrry nervous. Even the threads on the pullers center hub started to bind on me. The balancer was on there to stay!!!
Now, I hope to have the head off by the end of the weekend, and of coarse I'll post pics for some opinions. You guys here know a bit more than me on these and I value the advice. Thanks :hail:

How do the pictures look? What do you think about the pistons? I don't think they were hit too bad.
It looks like all the intake valves are bent. How much to replace? Anything else?
Thanks ya'll!

Does anybody have any ideas on fixing this? I believe the pistons are good. Should just the valves be replaced or could the head be damaged too? Should I just get another head? You guys are the experts here and I value your opinions!

I'm not an expert but I'd say the pistons are fine but you might as well replace the head. Get one off e-bay. Ray (midnightautoparts) will have one even if it's not listed. You could also try NESHO or FPS.

I have tried Ray and he doesn't have any. How do I get ahold of the other two? I will look around, but I have only read bits and pieces about them. I assume they are vendors here???
THanks
