I have 87k miles on my SHO and I replaced the fluid or silver sludge out of my ptu. After seeng pics of what they look like on the inside can I drop it clean it out ( if so what would be the best way?) do the drain plug mod and install and all is good with the world? And at what point is it trashed? Can it be rebuilt? If so where can I order parts?

Now my transmission was doing the 2-3 gear flair but my LMS tune fixed that. But now my problem is the trans wot shutter bangs at the end of first gear and slams into second gear( I have done a trans fluid change and it looked new coming out but changed it anyway) has anyone had this problem. If it's something dumb I missed I'd rather know now then rebuild it.

Thanks all!!

With the 1-2 shift issue, I had this for a while!
After changing the fluid, it was still present so I changed it agin with no results. I did a third drain and fill, and the shudder is 100% gone now!

The good/bad thing about the ptu in 2010-12 is no cooling system to deal with. If you are willing to invest in physically removing the PTU and inspecting it, good on you!

Were there metal pieces in the sludge you pulled out? If not, then I would repeat the fluid replacement a couple of times to get it nice and clean. Drilling the drain hole can be done with care. More people are doing it on the Edge, and sucessfully.

If metal pieces came out, the PTU is very likely on its way out :( Any grinding or whining from the PTU is NOT good.

Try the trans approach suggested above, with Mercon LV of course. If that doesnt work, and you think its a trans problem, have a BG flush done. I assume you have already got new plugs in the engine, 0.030 gap?

If the car shudders and rpm fluctuates with no throttle input, that could be a torque converter issue.

The 1-2 shudder at WOT is common in tuned vehicles. Most have been able to eliminate or mitigate it with a tune revision.

I have talked to a tuner from LMS before and he never gave that as a option. In the 4 tune it was fine but once I started the 4+ tune it started so I put it back in 4 and it does it in that tune now I have had a random thud every once and a while like 2 times that I can remember 3-4. But the shudder from 1-2 is like you ran over rough railroad tracks for 2 seconds straight. LMS advised me to change ptu fluid and trans fluid but still the same. I thought about just taking it up there. One thing they did keep saying is the transmission learns and adapts could it be that I need to re tune it and drive it normal to re learn?

Personally, I have had no luck. I love my LMS tune, but I have tried softer and softer shift tunes from them - even going down to stock shift pressures. But, it still gets about a 1/2 second shudder on 1-2 at WOT.

AT first, LMS advised to let it learn, but that hasn't done much for mine. They contend mine is an anomaly, as no one else with the "soft shift" tune has complained.

I, too, have changed PTU, RDU, and trans fluid.

How many times did you change the trans fluid?
It took mine three drain/fills with a week in between each to fix this problem... And mine was pretty bad!

Just for a side note...
I had my dealer do a full flush before I ever touched my transmission, and that's why I was skeptical that the fluid was the issue because it changed nothing at all.
One day I was at the parts store walking by the trans fluid and figures why not...
Since I did that my 1-2 shift just chirps tire or scratches pavement:biggrin:

My gut tells me it is more likely the adaptive learning lightened his shifts over that 3 week period.

No offense, and I acknowledge I might be wrong ...

Has anyone used amsoil in the trans or should I just stick with the merc?

I had my tune installed for almost 5 months before I touched anything transmission related.

13black, what brand fluid did you change to, out of curiosity?

And did you "overfill" the trans a little, per LMS recommendations? If so, by how much?

I guess "overfill" isn't clear. I was told one pint over, but I'm not sure if that means over the "hash lines" full mark or over the "max safe line" full mark.
