Tried searching but PTU is too short to return any results. And "replacement" gives me a million results.

I had the fluid changed about 40k miles ago but am getting the propane/fart smell if I get on it much. How difficult is it to replace the PTU if I were to order one and do it myself? I do not have a lift, btw.

Change the oil it's pretty easy i actually did it last week. If its only the fart smell and no gear issue why change whats not broke. I added a longer fill tube and tucked it away so changing the fluid is effortless. I'm thinking of doing it every oil change now. Because changing the ptu with or without a lift will be a bitch in my eyes. anyway that's my opinion.

Well, I'm under the impression that if it smells like that it has probably turned into paste, which would be pretty difficult to get out of the vent. I might give it a shot when I get back from vacation in three weeks.

Great idea do that then, Drive around a bit put on 1000 miles then do it again till you can get that sludge out, after 2x you should be good. Better then spending at least a grand for a replacement. If you need any help on the process just ask its still fresh in my mind since i just did it last week.

What yr is your car is it PP ? PP has a drain plug and you add oil in the air vent hose.

I have my old PTU. It has the drain plug in it and is OK. I replaced it but it turned out my wheel bearing were actually out, not the PTU. :0
