I have a 2010 SHO PP that just turned 70K. My wife's DD. It started whining. Local trans shop says it's the PTU and they want to replace it. Fluid has never been changed. (my bad) My question is, would a fluid change cure the whining, or is it too late?

A fluid change is beyond my expertise, can anyone recommend a shop that would perform the service. If you think that would solve the whine. I am located 30 miles south of Pittsburgh PA

Thank you, Tom

With it already whining the chances are it's undergone some damage.
The fluid change may help but it could still go out at any moment.

PTU is on its last legs. Have the trans shop replace it and I suggest putting Redline Lightweight Shockproof Fluid in it.

Got the car back, $775 for PTU, $531 for installation. No more noise.

It was leaking a bit, he told me he has seen worse.

He also said a fluid change would not have prevented failure. They are a weak link. Has changed many on AWD Fords.

With that being said, has anyone complained to Ford and got any satisfaction?

He is wrong. Fluid break down is the leading cause of PTU failures.

Directly from a member on here Mr. HighCaliber.

PTU dont fail at least not from a power handling perspective. These only fail from lack of maintenance. Spun bearings and galling of the gears from lack of lubrication.

High Heat dries up the lighter oil molecules in the ****, which causes more heat due to lack of lubrication (thermal runaway) which leads to the remaining gear oil turning to thick black paste which clogs up the vent tube in the ptu which cause pressure buildup in the ptu which forces the remaining, non-congealed fluid out past the shaft seals. Now the only left is a thick paste thats easily flung off of the gears, sticking only to the case. After this chain of events, the bearings run dry and begin to fail, next are the gears. Tolerances widen or things begin to sieze. Bearing and gear noise are usually the first signs of mechanical failure.

But the PTU internals are stout. The weakest part of our powertrain is the RDU Atc coupler. (The electronic coupler in the rear differential). At least in terms of tq capacity and power handling.
