I've read several of ptu threads, I did the vent tube ext. I have a 15 sho PP, I drained out about 12 oz of fluid. My question is how much fluid do input back in. I've read several put in what u took, 18 oz, just looking for clarification. Before I put to much in. Any tips, tricks would be a massive help, also looking to do rear def next. Thank you in advance for any help

With the car sitting level, fill it back until it overflows. I usually try to plug it without too much excess escaping.

When you do the RDU, make sure you have a slim socket wrench or grinder handy. There's an unused exhaust bracket in the way of the fill plug. Some people cut it off but I just use a slim socket. It can be done with a normal socket wrench but it'll require the use of some foul language and/or extra patience.

Actually wasn't to bad, my transfer pump runs on battery so the transfer of fluids was easy I only got a quart out. Filled it to it came out of the drain plug. Fluid was pretty black. Glad I changed it. My car officially has new fluids. I've had it since last May but have barley driven it due to needing to replace the whole suspension. She is finally done.

This is a relevant thread so I'm doing my ptu and rdu today and I pulled maybe 6oz out of the ptu, I spent an hour adjusting the tube and trying to pick up anything, the first 4oz came out with some ease. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, I filled it up with shockproof to see if it was really just THAT low and it took maybe 8oz before it started coming back out. I'm using the air powered vac and I tried putting a straw on it, a rigid 90 bend in the tube, nothing coming out. Should I try again with something else and call half a bottle of shockproof a loss?

Nah, put a little more until it oozes again and button it up with some sealant thread on the plug.

Thank you, sitting here bugging out hoping someone responded soon lol
I did the same my first time. Now I don't even measure. Just get as much out as possible, top it off, button her up, and keep going.

BTW - You're going to randomly smell that used fluid for a while. I was just picking up brush with a pair of gloves I must have worn last time. After washing my hands, I still smell it.

Not many worse smells than gear oil, I took a bath in the shockproof (pump didn't fit the bottle so it was on there loose) the whole time I kept chanting "the stones are in me". Good to know it's not an exact science though.

Drilled and tapped a hole for a drain off the bottom of the PTU, and fill through an extension I put on the PTU vent. 232K miles later, no issues with the PTU. Although it takes me about 30 minutes to fill 18 oz through the vent (overall, still takes less time than messing with the normal method of draining and filling).
