I checked my PS Reservoir to see if I needed a change. the fluid is nice and pink/red I hear some grinding noises everynow and again. How good of a sample can the reservoir give, should I flush it anyways??

The entire volume of fluid traverses the entire PS system plumbing in under 2 minutes at ~2000 RPM, so if the fluid in your reservoir is good, then the rest of it is too.

You sure the grinding is from the PS hydraulics, and not a tie rod, end, or strut mount?

I had a knocking noise coming from my engine. Could not track it down. Changed the PS pump three times. Finally the alternator was suggested as the problem and sure enough the bearings were bad in it.

7786 is a Windstar alternator. While the V8 SHO alt. and Windstar alt share many common parts, the alternators are not the same.

For now, GL354RM at Ford is the best bet.

We're still working on our custom built 100% new alternators, but they probably won't be available until after the 1st of the year some time.

I was told that GLV-8354RM was the SHO alternator.

Yup, same thing. That's the new superceding part number, I just haven't managed to commit it to memory yet like the old one! :)

Well there wasn't much left to fix. :) Thanks Bonk

Another clue too was the fact the tensioner pulley was bounching around when the engine was running.

this may sound weird, but can a bad alternator **** a battery, I fully charged my battery last night, and disconnected ANYTHING that wasn't stock, and 12hrs later it was stone dead?

On normal auto start maintenance free type batteries a couple of complete discharges without immediate complete recharge will usually lead to the road of ruin for the battery. The plates sulfate up and the electrons gots no where to go.

If you mean deep discharge batteries they are different. The problem is the grid alloys. Most low maintenance/no maintenance batteries have a calcium alloy. This will put a coating on the outside of the grid electrically insulating it from the active plate material when the cells are driven into a reverse state or left in a discharged state. Most deep discharge batteries use a cadmium alloy doped in that prevent this.

This type of dry cell means the liquid electrolyte (acid) is absorbed by and contained in a fiberglass mat so it won't spill yet allows for electrical conduction.

SO I replaced the alternator, and all the cabling (went to 4ga welding wire). the lights have never been brighter, and I have to dim the casd cause it hurts my eyes at night. Needless to say I love it. However, where is this ground that everyone told me about. the only thing on the altenator, was a post for the + cable, and a wire harness. am I to assume the engine ground in the front of the engine was what was being reffered to? cause that is getting upgraded today as well.

EDIT, oh yeah....what could cause my battery light to come on at 5500-6000? it flickers, then is gone or it is on and stays on till i turn the car off.
