EDIT, oh yeah....what could cause my battery light to come on at 5500-6000? it flickers, then is gone or it is on and stays on till i turn the car off.
That's indicative of a Windstar alternator installed in a SHO. Keep your receipt handy for the warranty exchange.

Hey JSIL1, that alt is bad(sorry to say) same thing happened to mine and now is almost ready to die(will get it replaced next week),on the other hand I replaced my girlfriends with the same westling and is working wreat. You just have to swap the pulleys(both alts that I get from carquest came with a wrong pulley)
Last note: The alt on my silver car was bad since day one.

7786 is a WINDSTAR ALTERNATOR. It is NOT A SHO ALTERNATOR.

Just because more than one manufacturer's catalog shows the WRONG APPLICATION, doesn't make it so. FWIW, the Lester catalog (the industry standard reference on which alternator and starter part numbers are based), has not even assigned a catalog part number to a V8 SHO alternator.

A whole bunch of manufacturer's catalogs show PCV valves for the V8 SHO, but only the OE Ford valve works properly. A whole bunch of catalogs show the 601 size brake pads for the front on V8 SHO's, but the 598 size is correct. There are countless other examples.

Either get the alternator from Ford, or go to a local shop to have your old one rebuilt.

If you have your receipt for the last Ford one, take it back to Ford and get it replaced. Ford reman parts carry a 12 month warranty.

If not, try to find an "Auto Electric" shop. As the name implies, they specialize in automotive electrics, like starters, alternators, etc. Their names are usually not too complex, for instance my local shop is called "Boston Auto Electric." They can usually do the rebuild same day, often in just a couple of hours, and usually for far less than you'd pay at any parts store.

I have a refference and have heard a lot of good things about this shop, so that is the one I am going to use if Ford stiffs me. They said $125 was about average.

The thing with the Fud wattany is that it is 12 mo or 12k. I have been 14 in 6mo. I dont have the receipt but my service manager is the one who looked it up for me so i can just get him to print me a copy

Motorcraft has the wrong regulator listed on their site for the SHO. But I doubt if that make s a big difference. They also have pulleys that range from 54 mm to 74 mm. That to me is the big difference that makes the SHOs burn up alternators. See if you can find the 74 mm pulley and it would slow down the alternator considerably.

Other than that I don't think there is a big difference between the SHO alternator and a Windstar alternator.

For now, GL354RM at Ford is the best bet.

We're still working on our custom built 100% new alternators, but they probably won't be available until after the 1st of the year some time.
The dealership put a new alt. in my sho back in May.

Yes indeed. :thumb:

In order to unnecessarily complicate things, many Ford parts have two part numbers, a Ford part number (F6DZ-10V346-DRM) and a Motorcraft part number (GLV-8354-RM) which are both the exact same identical part. And they wonder why they're losing money... :bonk:

Paul, I don't know... how hard is it to measure without disassembly?

With a caliper you can measure it with the tire off or just the car jacked up. Don't feel bad as I don't know what I have. But one I took off had a 59 mm pulley and a burnt up regulator.

I think correct the pulley is more important than the correct regulator seeing as this is what will determine ultimate alternator rpm.
