Hey Tom,

1st, go to shotimes.com and see how to pull codes. That would help on pinpointing guesses.

Smoke is probably oil dripping from the front crank seal or cam sensor onto the cats. Look for oil traces on the engine.

The clunk under the driver's seat sounds like the bolt that holds the subframe is rusted/loose causing the subframe to move and clunk. What year SHO is it? I know there was a recall on the sub frame a while back. That might be something to look into.

BTW, where in Nebraska are you located?

Yes you should be able to tighten the bolt. Just crawl underneath and tighten it. Just make sure that it is not rusted to heck first. You do not want to break the bolt. The way Lincoln & Omaha drop salt like water in the winter, the undercarige tends to rust quickly.

I am located near Rapid City, SD. Moved here 2 years ago from Omaha, NE. Purchased my SHO from HP Smith Ford in Omaha 5 years ago.

Tom, if the area you live in is listed in the recall, the dealer will do the work for free. I'd keep an eye on that oil light it may have a short or it may be foretelling something bad. You might want to drop the oil pan and check the bearings before the cold weather rolls in.

You should be able to find it on the net if you search. The dealer will have it in his database and you could just pick up the phone and call.

The smoke is probably due to oil leakage from the front main crank seal, dripping from the tab on the lower timing belt cover below the crankshaft damper, onto the front catalytic converter and burning away. The remedy for this is to replace the front main crank seal during hte next timing belt change. The $8 part is not in itself sufficient reason to dig all the way into the front of the engine. You must do all the labor to remove the timing belt and then also remove the crank timing belt pulley to access the front main seal. It is only a minor extra effort when the engine is prepared for a new timing belt.

The flickering oil light is caused by low oil pressure and neither the oil pan seal or the front crank seal will cause that condition. What grade of oil are you using? In the hot summer months, 10W-30 is the recommended minimum weight you should use if you see temperatures near 100F degrees. If you are using 5W-30, the owners manual says ot use the 10W-30 for the temps above 100.

If your oil is already 10W-30 (Castrol GTX or Valvoline and never Pennzoil or Quaker State), is the light flickering at any time other than idle? If not, it may be due to a low idle speed. Search the Forum for the procedure to reset the idle speed program. If it is lighting at higher engine speeds, hope it is a failing oil pressure sender, because the alternative is worn bearings.

The clunking under the driver's seat? That is probably the exhaust resonator striking the underside of the floorpan. Get under there and check for alignment of the piping and any worn or damaged rubber hangers. The piping section from the exhaust manifolds to the ****** aft of the catalytic converters (Y-pipe) may have been bolted to the manifolds by a repair shop in a manner which causes the resonator to be too close to either side of the tunnel.

The movement of the exhaust system raises the possibility of worn out motor mounts - specifically the front mount. Raise the hood and watch the engine as you let out the clutch against the parking brake. How far does the forward intake manifold plenum rise? If it is more than 1", the front mount is worn out. Do the same in reverse and watch the rear of the engine to check the condition of the rear motor mount.

yes the flickering oil light is only at idle.... i use valvoline 10w 30.... it doesn't seem to do it now cuz its a little bit cooler, and i am going to check that clanking noise tonite.... I just got my timing belt done like a month ago :( but i got a quote for both my front main seal and oil pan gasket and for both to repair was like 480$....

Thanx alot for your guys' help!

You might also want to check to see if the IAB (Idle Air Bipass) nostrils are clear, if they clog up it will cause the engine to run poor at idle, when the rpms drop, the oil light will flicker. Also another thing to consider is the alternator and/or battery. My engine would not idle worth a darn right before the alternator went bye-bye.

Sdpat covered some of the other posibilties for the clunk.

BTW where do you take your SHO for repair?

Eric
