I dont know much about the ATX. But were you loosing over drive? Did you try shutting it off when this happened to see if there was any change?

When the Gen 3s do this it is the TC locking and unlocking because the A/C compressor is on. Try running in either just the vent or floor positions and see if it stops doing that.

I'm getting scared. At the moment when this start I feel a little jolt, like changing gear, but why O/D button works?I mean rpm goes up and down as I push the button. What is the defference betwen 3rd and 4th gear in rpm, mayby I'm loosing the 4th gear?

if the bands are slipping, here is something you might look into. but first a warning...i have never done this, only been told about it, so if you choose to do it, i am not to be held liable for any mishappenings. ok, with that said, ive heard that could could pour a capful of brake fluid into the tranny fluid. something causes it to make the bands sticky, hence, curing the slipping gears.

Run the KOEO and KOER diagnostic tests.

You didn't mention if you had a CEL in conjuction with the change in engine speed.

My old 93 Explorer exhibited the same symptom (changing engine speed while at constant speed, TC locking/unlocking, etc) a long time ago, it turned out to be a bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). The transmission lasted another 70K miles until a newer, heavier boat took its toll on the tranny.

Maybe you will get lucky and the TPS will be your problem.
