problem reinstalling manifold

so i new that the removal and install was too easy,and was waiting for something to go wrong...and it did...i need to know if the runners are specific to either the front tank or rear tank? i have the manifold back together,and upon instaling it it wont sit flat,i've found that the little studs in the heads wont line up with the holes for them in the runner ******?!?!?!?!! so again,is there a certain set of runners that go with the front tank or vis versa? otherwise,is there a trick to get them to line up?

The runners are not specific, they are the same so don't worry about mixing them up. Assemble the manifold and tighten all the 12mm nuts on the intake. It should bolt right up.

Try loosening all the hose clamps on the runners-to-butterflies, installing the intake and then tighten the hose clamps after it bolts up. It may take some massaging but it should bolt right up. Watch your secondary vacuum lines too.

thanks,luckily she's off the road in the winter...i've tried everything to get it back on..the runners seem to close together,for instance i had to force them to clear the fuel rail?

Did you try loosening all the hose clamps?

Seems like each time I put a new intake together, it took some massaging to get seated. I have had to gently force them past the fuel rail too. Keep trying, you'll get it. Make sure you aren't smashing any vacuum lines and make sure the gaskets stay seated.

I agree on loosening the hose clamps. Mine was fun to try and install and not scratch the polished runners.

yeah..i spent all day gasket matching knife edging,porting,cleaning the manifold and head...also painted the manifold and runners...of course i scratched the **** out of it after i started kicking it!!! i tried to loosen them,but nothing moves when i try to pull or push on the runners...i'll try again tomorrow..do you guys know of anything else i should do while the manifold is off?

well i fu wouldnt have already painted it i would recommend having it cleaned by a machine shop.. they do some kind of acid bath or something to remove all the residue

I would paint the timing cover and valve covers if you feel like it, it makes it look much better.

we had the same problem when putting the powder coated intake on somedudes turbo sho

luckily, we had a spare motor sitting in the garge, so we were able to slap the inatke on THAT motor, and get a VERY good visual on what the problem was

the final decision was just basicly its a complex intake, and a fraction here and a fraction there of misalignment adds up

we loosened all the clamps and bolts, removed the cross over tube from the passanger side, squeezed the surge tanks TOWARDS each other, and dropped a load of bolts in

it took some work, but as soon as you get the bolts started, the manifold will wind up bolting down level and leak free ... just dont screw up the gaskets on top of the runners in the process

install the cross-over last ... that seamed to be what realy aggravated the problem on alex's car

I know mine dosent quite fit, and I was thinking of wrapping mine in a towel, loosening all the clamps, and pulling it together with some tow straps. It might be off 1/4" but I knew it would be a little off when the surge tank didn't quite fit. Oh well.. I'm just wondering how all this freakin enamel is going to smell And for how long, considering that I've painted.. ummm oh yea everything.

If you are using the stock couplers on the runners, they are direction specific. There is a ridge in the inside and it is not in the middle, but offset little. The deeper side fit over the butterflies, the shallower on the runner side. I found this out the same way you did, put it together and tried to bolt it on and it didn't fit.

ahh...that explains why no matter how hard i try to push the tanks the runners wont move

If you are using the stock couplers on the runners, they are direction specific. There is a ridge in the inside and it is not in the middle, but offset little. The deeper side fit over the butterflies, the shallower on the runner side. I found this out the same way you did, put it together and tried to bolt it on and it didn't fit.

i didn't know that. I used a ratchet strap to pull the tanks togeather, i didn't have to pull it much but it was a pitta. I thought it warped in powdercoat.

he was right,i pulled it back apart,and changed the couplers around(also got rid of the **** in the middle)...but i have a new problem***see thread in emerg. tech section***

If your intake has been powder coated, you must check all the mounting flanges carefull for excess coating. M<y perticular problem was that some of the powder coating got into the small holes on the underside of the runners. These holes line up with the studs/dowels that are on the heads themselves. Also make sure that where the cross over tube bolts down, that there is no powder coating on the mounting areas. This will effect the grounding of the DIS.

Exactly what I said when it didn't fit. Took me a half hour to figure out the problem or less than 5 minutes after I disassembled the intake
