Hey guys. Was just curious if anyone is running premium fuel only or if your using reg unleaded in your SHO?

Was talking to a salesman at the dealer yesterday and they said I can get away with using regular; that it will just decrease in performance slightly. I was under the impression that due to the turbos they HAD to have super. Is this true or not?

Thanks

No car on the market today (well, among "normal" cars priced under $200K or so!) can run on lower octanes. Don't get all the power or mileage, but they are made that way.

Plus, you never really know what you are getting at the pump.

Okay so your saying the reg unleaded is ok to use in a SHO?

Yeah, if you want. Personally I wouldn't do it in hot summer driving around town. FWIW, I used to run 87 in my turbo Legacy for pure highway running. For just cruising, I didn't see a drop in mpg, which, in that cruise-control mode, was all I wanted anyway.

Okay, I just don't want to pay the 4.20 a gallon if I don't have to, but, I also don't want to harm the motor.

You can come here to Southern California and pay 1000 a year for registration fees. WHich is going up by the way.

If you are that concerned then just use premium. I personally do (especially since I tuned it). It's only a few more dollars per tank for peace of mind. None of us here are engine calibrators for Ford so we can only give you opinions and not facts.

GTF outta there!!

CA was the Promised Land for Middle America in the '60s - '80s, with AZ for retirees.

AZ is still decent for retirees, but TX is the new Promised land for Middle America (along with TN and FL, but FL is too damn humid!!).

From what I read, there are as many, if not more, folks fleeing CA as MI.

Yeah, you really don't want to know what socialist countries pay for their license fees + road taxes.

I just got gas for $4.03 in Brea at the 76 off of Imperial Hwy near Walmart.

I see you guys are still $0.50 - $0.60 cents higher than the MI-OH-KY corridor I drive.

Just filled with 93 octane for $3.69...that's the least expensive I've found in our area.

AZ tags on the Flex EB is $550ish a year....
Naturally aspirated cars can run on regular unleaded just fine, no need for premium.
EB motors I would stick to premium personally because it's a turbo motor and prone to detonation in the summer time and under load IMHO.

Guess, I shouldn't complain about Pennsylvania's $36.00 a year registration fee, and it sure makes the $79.00 I paid for my Lincoln Mark LT seem a lot less expensive.

Hm. Interesting question. If I wanted to find out what kind of fuel my SHO could safely use, where could I look?

Oh, yeah. The car came with a manual. With an index even! One page 347, we see:

OCTANE RECOMMENDATION 3.5L V6 SHO ENGINE

Your vehicle is designed to run on regular fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher. For best overall performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel will be most noticeable in hot weather or in severe duty applications such as towing a trailer.
