So I got the PPE downpipes on today and was expecting a little more sound from what I had read. I don't hear much of a difference at all other than the turbos whistling more. With that being said, I want to open it up a little, but I don't want it crazy loud. Acoustically speaking, would it make more sense to cut the mufflers or leave the rears and cut out the mid lunchbox and install strait through resonators?

For me, I cut off my back mufflers with a sawzall and took some oriley's pipe and clamps and just brought it out the 18-24 inches so the exhaust exits from the same place as factory. it was literally a 5 minute job, and well worth it IMO. I still have my "lunchbox" in the middle, but id bet that removing the back mufflers would be quicker, cheaper, and easier than trying to replace that, and then if you still want it louder you can always remove the "lunchbox" down the road.

I'm not looking for ungodly loud. This is my family car. Not my Mustang lol
If you are just looking for an improved exhaust note, I don't why you would start with DP's. I have a Borla cat-back system on my other 3.5 Ecoboost. You should be looking at mufflers and resonators IMHO.

I already have the PPE catted downpipes. It made little to no difference. That was discussed in the first post of the thread.

What I'm saying is that you seem to have installed DP's expecting some sort of exhaust note improvement. I'm suggesting you should have started with mufflers/resonators. Borla, for example, makes tuned exhaust systems for improved sound. DPs are more about performance.

Then by all means, dump the OEM exhaust. Look at the Borla system, which only leaves in the kitty cat. One cut, welding is optional.

What kind of performance gains did you feel you got from the downpipes? Noticeable? What other modifications do you have?
You can feel a peppiness in the cars response, very simple equation, turbos need to breath. Less restrictions, the better the response you get. I had my tune done with my third cat / resonator / and stock mufflers. Per AJP advice - I could send him logs after the exhaust changes - however he didn't expect anything he would need to do - NOR did he change a thing.

Once you cut out the 3rd cat and resonator - you will get drone. I have it now - since our vehicles are long and large - its not too bad. I am reconsidering making a change to get rid of mine - possibly a J pipe - or maybe cutting out the Flowmaster - for more "real" resonators. I will see. I opted to keep mufflers - with straight through design, mostly for exhaust notes/sound dampening. My car is as loud as these cars will get with a definite 6 cylinder sound.

I am waiting on my new tune from gearhead. The only thing I notice right now is that it WANTS more air. The intake ducks harder lol. I myself am looking at removing the 3rd cat with 2.5 piping all the way back with resonators. I have 3 Skar subs and a 1000w Amp so I am not too worried on drone. I just don't want it to be loud inside the car.

My tuner said that the stock CAI is fine with a K&N or similar filter. He hasnt seen any improvements using these open air bigger filter media - except for those who go with bigger turbos - NOT stock.

K&N is definitely good enough for the car. But I like hearing the engine sucking air though.
I like the Darth Vader vide I get with BOV's and open filter - with Turbo whine.... its a music mix.

X pipe and H pipes not recommended for turbocharged engines.

There is no need for an X or H pipe after the turbocharger. There are no typical exhaust pulses after the turbo (as opposed to a naturally aspirated engine), so there are no benefits from scavenging, etc. After the turbo, the exhaust's work is done. Get it out as quickly and easily as possible.

Performance wise yes, sound wise it makes a huge difference. For example Corsa and Stainless Works both incorporate an X pipe in the catbacks they offer for the SHO.
