I prefer a rebuilt unit becasue it is tested. Also it eliminates any suprises of finding bad parts during the rebuild.

rarely is it actually the pump, in my experience. it is more likely either the pressure line fitting leaking or the return line fitting. the return line bolts on to the top of the pump and there is a little o-ring there that after a million heat/cool cycles is hard as a rock and is the typical culprit in my experience. but it dribbles oil all over the pump so it looks like the pump is leaking...

If the only problem is your pump is leaking, then rebuilding the one you have may be better. Otherwise, get a rebuilt one. I put a rebuilt one on mine, and it's fine except for being noisier than the original. One day I'll get around to rebuilding the original one.
