they are only around $20 bucks for a new one from ford, however.... if you are crafty enough... you can make a small tranny cooler from any parts store work...

Why not try the "Oil and Crap Removal" spray. It comes in a can that looks just like intake or carburetor cleaner and may come with a nylon bristle brush. Cheaper than a new cooler.

wow... are those really the prices for that cooler??? my discount at ford must be pretty good..... got mine for 22......

at any rate.... good point scott, if the cooler isn't leaking, just clean it and replace the hoses if they are leaky

Scott,

Where can I get some "Oil and Crap Removal" spray? My local NAPA Store is fresh out of it, and we don't have O'Reiley's up in these parts!
Can I get it at WalMart?
:D :D :D

Seriously, try cleaning it with some sort of degreaser. Then check the hoses for soft spongieness. If the hoses have deterioated, then replace them. If the hoses are OK, then tighten the clamps a little.

That thing just is not in a spot where it is going to stay clean. rangerj

Since we are talking about power steering issues where is the best place to put an in-line filter? My PS fluid is downright nasty. I've been changing it out by the 'turkey baster' method but I would like something more tangible. Thanks.

Louis told you where to put it, I'll tell you where to get it.

Look for a Cardone # 20FLT1.

RockAuto for under 2 bucks. AZ is around $15-20. AAP can get it in 5 days for $3. NAPA is $2.29. Can't find it on O'Reilly's site.

The filter looks very much like an AC orifice tube and must be installed in the proper orientation in the return line to the reservoir.

Seems like a better filter, with a replaceable element, would be better. Is this a high pressure line? what size line?

same part number.... same filter.... we just keep it in stock....

o'reilly as a company doesn't rely on the computer as much as autozone/advance does..... its usually more accurate to goto the books in certain situations.... less margin for error....

at any rate... its the same filter... and it does look very similar to an A/C oriface tube

S Enriquez:
Anyone know where to get a power steering cooler, mine had oil and crap all over it. It's a 90 SHO. Thanks
Crap accumulation seems to be the thing on these coolers. Loosen the cooler, then loosen the two hoses, drain the ps fluid and clean the cooler with a screw driver and plenty of brake cleaner fluid. I've done this on both SHO's and they clean up pretty good.

This is also a great time to drain the PS fluid out and replace with synthetic ps fluid.

My oil was pretty cruddy too. I unhooked the hose off the Cooler and put it into a pan and then had somebody start the car while I poured fresh oil into the resevoir. I then hooked up the hoses, drove the car a bit and repeated the process again. Got the oil nice and clean and the whole system even sounds happier. Took me about 3L to do all the flushing.

I posted this one because my Power Steering Cooler is bent, like the previous owner ran over his dog in rage or something. It's bent, and it's dripping, i tried tightening the hoses, but to no avail. Do we really need these things?

might not need it.... but as high as our motors rev....i would think the fluid temperatures get higher than your average power steering systems.... its a good idea.....
